Job Description

Introduction

Jodrell Bank Observatory (JBO), inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2019, is part of The University of Manchester (www.manchester.ac.uk), one of the largest single-site universities in the UK, with a large student community. Jodrell Bank is renowned for the 76-metre Lovell Telescope, a British science and engineering icon, playing a key role in research on pulsars and testing physics theories such as Einstein's General Theory of Relativity.

In 2011, Jodrell Bank Observatory was shortlisted for UK Government's World Heritage Site status, recognizing its significance in astronomical research. The observatory hosts the e-MERLIN array of seven radio telescopes across the UK, connected by a high-speed optical fibre network, making it one of the most powerful telescope arrays worldwide.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and proactive Senior Technician to join our technical operations team. The role involves working in all weather conditions, performing physically demanding tasks, and providing technical support to staff and students to aid teaching, research, and professional services. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to world-leading scientific and engineering work at Jodrell Bank, part of The University of Manchester.

What you will get in return:

  • Market-leading pension scheme
  • Excellent health and wellbeing services, including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Generous annual leave entitlement plus bank holidays
  • Paid leave over the Christmas period
  • Discounts at major retailers

We are committed to diversity and inclusion, welcoming applicants from all backgrounds. We support flexible working arrangements, including hybrid options.
