Serco have an exciting opportunity as a Senior Technician Pilot Cutters and Barges to join the Marine Team in Faslane.


As the Pilot, Boat and Barge Engineer, your purpose is to support and maintain the Pilot Cutters and respective barge(s), mechanically and electrically as required to allow all operations to be undertaken and to undertake the role of Barge Operative when required for liquid transfers. This will include the day to day of the vessels, logs and maintenance record, recording and reporting data as required.

Main Accountabilities:

  • Support Planned Maintenance and both normal and emergency repair work when required.
  • To support the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of all onboard systems.
  • Consult with Operations and Technical as required to achieve a maximum output and support to operation and vessels.
  • Keep the Operations and Technical Superintendent appraised of any issues that may have a bearing on the operational output.
  • Assist with and ensure compliance with all relevant Oil and Environmental Pollution Prevention Legislation and to ensure that all responsible Officers are familiar with Emergency Procedures, Contingency Plans and capable of operating all Safety and Pollution Prevention equipment and appliance.
  • Become familiar with details of vessel’s construction, machinery and operating characteristics.
  • Conduct routine planning and maintenance iaw the maintenance schedule.
  • Support with and via external contractors, ensuring that any repair work being undertaken is carried out in a satisfactory manner.
  • Escort and work with contractors as required.
  • Formulate and return any reports if and as required by the company.
  • To carry-out any additional duties that may reasonably be requested by the company and in line with the individual’s requisite qualifications.
  • Support barge operations for the barge that the individual is assigned to or working on be it fuel, sewage or sullage barge.
  • To fulfil the role of barge operative when conducting barge operations.


What you’ll need to do the role:

  • Minimum CoC as an Engineer Officer of the Watch or higher, ie 2nd Engineer.
  • Any requisite STCW qualification to fulfil the primary role of the selected individual.
  • Basic Level Management / Leadership training or demonstrable equivalence.
  • Interpersonal skills adaptable to work with a small crew.
  • Knowledge of SMS and the ISM Code.
  • Health and Safety awareness
  • Marine Industry Background.
  • Understanding of a planned maintenance System (such as AMOS)
