Job description

The School of Natural Sciences within the College of Health and Science incorporates teaching, research and an advanced materials commercial consultancy facility; The Bridge. The School comprises departments in Chemistry, Life Sciences and Geography supporting both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research. The Bridge is closely intertwined with the School and provides industry partners access to specialist analytical instrumentation, materials characterisation and applied research expertise.

We are looking to recruit a Senior Technician in Analytical Chemistry with a focus on advanced materials characterisation to primarily support The Bridge but also to provide support to academics and research within the School of Natural Sciences. This includes operating, maintaining and troubleshooting advanced analytical and materials characterisation instrumentation, developing and validating test methods, and producing analytical results and reports to the standard and timescale required by external industrial clients. In addition the post will provide instrument support for the School with advice, guidance and training for academic staff and post graduate students as well as being responsible for maintaining and operating multiple analytical research instruments. It is therefore expected that the post holder will have and maintain an up-to-date knowledge of instrumentation and techniques relevant to the role. We would particularly welcome applications from candidates with experience in one or more of thermal analysis techniques including DSC, TGA, MDA or STA; X-ray diffraction, chromatography, mass spectrometry and vibrational spectroscopy.
