Job description

Highways and Transport is back at North East Lincolnshire Council, creating a rare opportunity to be part of something from the beginning.

As we establish and grow this service, we’re bringing together talented people who want to do more than simply deliver services. We’re looking for people who want to influence how they are designed, developed and improved for the future.

From maintaining and improving our highways network, to shaping how people travel across North East Lincolnshire, the work we do touches the lives of residents, businesses and visitors every day. Now is an exciting time to join us as we invest in our people, strengthen our expertise and create a service fit for the future.

Whether you’re starting your career as a technician, developing your professional expertise as an engineer, or stepping into a senior leadership role, you’ll have the opportunity to make your mark, grow your career and help shape the future of Highways and Transport in North East Lincolnshire.

What will your day look like?

As a Senior Technician within the Highway Asset Management, Maintenance and Structures Team, you will join a team in undertaking inspections of the highway network and provide practical technical support across a range of highway maintenance activities.

You will support North East Lincolnshire Council in meeting its statutory duty, as the highway authority, to maintain highways maintainable at public expense under Section 41 of the Highways Act 1980.

The role involves undertaking cyclical and reactive highway safety inspections, assessing defects through dynamic risk assessment, and raising appropriate repair actions in line with the Council’s Highway Inspection and Maintenance Policy and best-practice guidance.

You will report highway condition findings, contribute to proposals for programmed maintenance and network improvements, investigate customer service reports, and maintain accurate inspection records to support effective service delivery and the defence of highway liability claims.

You will also work closely with other Council service areas to report third-party faults, including matters relating to planning and environmental enforcement and utility works.

You’ll also be a key point of contact for routine technical queries, helping colleagues, Members, partners and stakeholders understand information clearly and confidently. Alongside this, you’ll support site inspections, surveys, audits and data collection, making sure records are accurate, useful and up to date.

This is a hands-on technical role where your attention to detail, experience and ability to work with others will make a real difference.

Who are we looking for?

We’re looking for someone with experience in a relevant technical or professional field who is comfortable working with data, systems, records and technical information.

You’ll need to be organised, accurate and able to manage competing priorities. As the role involves a mix of office-based work and site inspections, you’ll also need to be comfortable working outdoors in different weather conditions.

Experience of highway maintenance would be helpful, along with experience of inspections, surveys and customer service.

You need to be dependable, approachable and confident enough to share your technical knowledge in a way that helps others.

As part of this role, you will need to hold a driving license.

Why join us?

This is a role where you can build on your technical experience and become a really important part of a growing service.

You’ll be joining Highways and Transport at a time when we’re shaping new ways of working, improving how we use data and building a stronger in-house service for the future.

If you care about quality, enjoy solving practical problems and want your work to support better outcomes for our local places and the people of North East Lincolnshire, we’d love to hear from you.

We love AI and think it plays a great role in the world of work. However, for your application, we want to hear from YOU! As such, we will be testing applications to determine the use of AI, and applications that have heavily utilised the function will be scrutinised for suitability.
