Job summary

Network Rail in Glasgow (Scotland) is seeking a Senior Telecoms Technician to install, maintain and repair telecommunications systems across the railway network. You will lead a team, work safely, and ensure systems meet required standards.

Scotland's Railway is part of this large family and it covers a large geographical area from the Borders to Thurso at the far tip of the North East of Scotland, accounting for almost 20 per cent of the UK rail network. We provide rapid access along busy commuter routes to our seven cities, servicing the varied needs of our business and leisure commuter services, including cross border services and rural services. About the role

This is a Full-Time Permanent position.

The Senior Technician undertakes and directs inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal work as allocated safely, efficiently and to relevant standards and where directed, lead a team.

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Telecoms Technician to join our dynamic team in Glasgow. As a Telecoms Technician, you will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of telecommunications systems and equipment (SDH, PDH, IP and GSM) used across our railway network.

Here are some of the duties your role will include:

  • Install, test, and commission telecoms equipment and systems.
  • Perform routine maintenance and inspections to ensure optimal performance.
  • Diagnose and repair faults in telecoms transmission / voice systems (SDH, PDH, IP networks).
  • Work collaboratively with other teams to ensure seamless operations.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate safety arrangements for staff under your control including Contractors.
  • Carry out work safely and in accordance with the safe systems of work procedures, method statements or other relevant instructions.
  • Undertake work and associated duties for which you are trained and competent.
  • Undertake and direct work activities in a safe and efficient manner and in accordance with all relevant standards.
  • Control and check the quality of work undertaken and confirm assets are compliant to standards.
  • Check that the staff under your control have the appropriate and valid competencies.
  • Check that vehicles, plant, tools, equipment and materials under your control are fit for use and are used/stored and disposed of correctly.
  • Accurately report all work completed/not completed and produce/maintain records as required.
  • Contribute to your own development and that of others.
  • Adhere to company policies and procedures.
  • Deputise for the Section Manager as required.
  • Coach and mentor junior grades as required.

Essential Criteria

  1. Experience of arranging and implementing safe systems of work.
  2. Knowledge of how to organise and control the safe and efficient delivery of work.
  3. Able to demonstrate, promote and embed safe working behaviours within the team.
  4. Able to lead, motivate and direct a team.
  5. Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  6. Knowledge and experience of Communications inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal
  7. techniques.
  8. Knowledge of relevant standards, procedures and instructions.
  9. Hold and retain competencies relevant to this post, required by business need.
  10. Ideally hold (or be working towards) an NVQ level 2 or 3 (or equivalent) in a relevant subject or
  11. have attained an appropriate level of knowledge through equivalent relevant experience.
  12. Able and willing to drive vehicles as required by business need.
