Job summary

Essential Employment is seeking a Senior Technical Officer for Cambridge on a full-time, temporary contract. The role covers investigations, inspections, and complex cases across Commercial and Licensing, Residential, Environmental Quality and Growth areas.

You will act as the specialist lead in these areas and provide technical advice to other staff. The position is a full-time temporary contract with the agency handling employment services and pre-employment checks.

Responsibilities

• Plan and undertake work with the line manager per service standards.
• Record visits and actions in statutory records and update databases.
• Ensure all work complies with legislative standards and service policy and is followed up to completion.
• Decide on enforcement actions and recommend prosecutions as needed.
• Prepare reports and attend court, inquiries and committees.

Job description

Senior Technical Officer needed in Cambridge, £22.37ph PAYE - Reference: 5307694

To carry out the full range of duties of a Senior Technical Officer from basic investigations/inspections to the most complex cases in relation to one of the assigned work team/work area – namely Commercial and Licensing, Residential, and Environmental Quality and Growth and to act as the specialist lead in that work area.

• Inspect the district to which s/he is assigned to keep informed of the environmental health circumstances therein; analysis of complex areas of work, problem solve, make complex decisions and take appropriate action and to liaise with the officers in their team and Officers in other teams/work areas as necessary.
• Make the necessary arrangements to plan and undertake the agreed work programmed in liaison with the relevant line manager and in accordance with the service standards and quality criteria set by the service.
• Record details of all visits and action taken in accordance with service policy and procedures by manual or electronic means, in particular to maintain all necessary statutory records. To update and review the accuracy of the Service’s database as often as necessary.
• Ensure all work required by informal or formal action is in accordance with legislative standards and service policy and is followed up to completion.
• Take decisions as to what is the most appropriate enforcement action and proceed with that action including the use of informal letters and notices, statutory notices, and after consultation with the Team Manager, make recommendations to the Environmental Health Manager with regard to potential cautions and prosecutions. Conform to the Enforcement Policy and the departmental procedures
• Prepare reports, statements of evidence and attend court, public enquiries and committees as necessary.
• Support and offer technical advice in a specialist area of work to other officers, students, other staff or contractors as directed.
• Undertake health education and health promotion in relation to the relevant work areas as directed.
• Install and/or operate the equipment provided in relevant work areas in order to record or monitor safety and environmental conditions as appropriate.
• Assist with the practical training of Student EHO’s, TO’s and other staff as required from time to time in the relevant work area a
