Job summary

AtkinsRéalis UK Limited is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to lead engineering activities across the lifecycle for complex defence, nuclear and critical infrastructure programmes. You will mentor engineers, manage requirements, and guide architecture development with a focus on delivering high-value outcomes.

The role offers flexible, hybrid working arrangements and opportunities to shape national programmes, with collaboration across major client stakeholders and senior engineering leaders.

Qualifications

• Degree-qualified in a relevant STEM discipline (or equivalent experience).
• Experience delivering systems engineering within defence, aerospace, nuclear, energy, infrastructure or government programmes.
• Strong understanding of systems engineering principles, lifecycle management and standards (ISO15288).
• Experience leading requirements engineering, architecture, integration, verification and validation activities.
• Proven ability to lead technical teams, influence engineering decisions and deliver successful outcomes.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with experience engaging senior technical and non-technical audiences.
• Experience using digital engineering, modelling and architecture tools and frameworks (Doors, Cameo, SysML, UML).
• Knowledge of MOD acquisition processesKiD versus programmed deliveries and commercial considerations.

As a Senior Systems Engineer within our Advanced Engineering Delivery & Consultancy (AEDC) Practice, you'll play a leading role in delivering solutions to some of the UK's most complex defence, nuclear and critical infrastructure challenges. You'll work directly with major clients, helping to define capability, influence key engineering decisions and solve highly complex technical problems. This is a role for engineers who enjoy variety, responsibility and impact. You'll contribute across the full systems engineering lifecycle, from concept and requirements development through architecture, integration, verification and acceptance. You'll work on programmes spanning land, maritime, air, space, nuclear and Critical National Infrastructure domains, gaining exposure to some of the UK's most strategically important projects. You'll be trusted to lead technical work packages, provide direction to multidisciplinary teams, mentor developing engineers and engage confidently with senior client stakeholders. Whether supporting capability development, system integration or complex engineering transformation programmes, your expertise will help shape solutions that deliver lasting value.

Projects are delivered across a range of locations, including Aldermaston, Barrow-in-Furness, Faslane and Devonport, providing opportunities to work on nationally significant programmes that few organisations can offer.

Your role

As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will:

• Lead the application of systems engineering principles, processes and standards across the engineering lifecycle.
• Define and manage requirements, ensuring traceability through design, integration, verification and validation.
• Lead architecture development and solution design for complex systems and capabilities.
• Provide technical leadership to multidisciplinary teams, work packages and engineering activities.
• Apply systems, architecture and digital engineering techniques to support analysis, integration and decision-making.
• Conduct technical assessments, trade studies and engineering analysis to inform programme decisions.
• Support system integration, acceptance and transition to operational use.
• Build strong stakeholder relationships, mentor engineers, contribute to business growth and apply MOD acquisition knowledge, including KiD.

About you

We're looking for experienced Systems Engineers who are passionate about solving complex problems and delivering meaningful outcomes. If you don't meet every requirement but believe you can bring value to the role, we'd still love to hear from you.

• Degree-qualified in a relevant STEM discipline (or equivalent experience), with CEng, CSEP or progress towards professional registration.
• Experience delivering systems engineering within complex defence, aerospace, nuclear, energy, infrastructure or government programmes.
• Strongunderstanding of systems engineering principles, lifecycle management and standards (e.g. ISO15288).
• Experience leading requirements engineering, architecture, integration, verification and validation activities.
