Job summary

Carrington West is seeking a Senior Structures Engineer to support the delivery of highway structures maintenance and improvement programmes on the South Coast. The role includes bridges, culverts, retaining walls and related assets, from initial assessment through to construction, with hybrid working and a Bournemouth office day.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop highway structures schemes from concept through to construction.
• Produce and review drawings, specifications, tender docs and pre-construction information.
• Carrying out visual, general and principal bridge inspections.
• Support development of planned maintenance programmes using asset data.
• Manage highway structures projects, consultants and contractors.
• Supervise site-specific contract delivery teams.
• Monitor programme, cost, quality and project performance.
• Work across projects with values typically between £1m and £5m.
• Liaise with contractors, utilities and stakeholders.
• Ensure works comply with standards and CDM requirements.

Senior Structures Engineer - Highways

Location: Bournemouth / Hybrid - minimum 1 day per week in the office

Hours: 37 hours per week

Start Date: ASAP

Contract: Interim / Contract

A local authority on the South Coast is looking to appoint an experienced Senior Structures Engineer to support the delivery of its highway structures maintenance and improvement programme.

The role will cover a varied structures portfolio including road bridges, footbridges, culverts, subways, retaining walls and gantries, with involvement across the full project lifecycle from initial assessment and design through to construction and completion.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop highway structures schemes from concept through to construction


• Produce and review drawings, specifications, tender documentation and pre-construction information


• Carry out visual, general and principal bridge inspections


• Support the development of planned maintenance programmes using asset condition and prioritisation data


• Manage highway structures projects, consultants and contractors


• Supervise site-specific contract delivery teams


• Monitor programme, cost, quality and project performance


• Work across projects with annual values typically between £1m and £5m


• Liaise with contractors, utilities, internal teams and other stakeholders


• Ensure works comply with relevant technical standards, legislation and CDM requirements


• Support improvements and innovation across structures and asset management

Requirements

• Substantial experience delivering highway structures projects


• Strong technical knowledge of bridges and other highway structures, including design and construction


• Experience managing bridge/structures projects and supervising construction works


• Knowledge of DMRB, British Standards and Eurocodes


• Experience undertaking bridge inspections in accordance with relevant highway structures inspection standards


• Good understanding of CDM 2015 and health & safety requirements


• Experience of contract and project management, including cost and quality control


• Ability to manage consultants, contractors and technical staff across multiple projects


• Relevant engineering qualification at RQF Level 4-7


• Chartered Engineer with ICE or IStructE


• Experience with finite element/grillage analysis software such as LUSAS, ENCAD or similar


• Ability to travel to sites when required

This would suit an experienced Senior Bridge Engineer, Senior Structures Engineer or Highway Structures Engineer who is comfortable working across design, inspections, asset management and project delivery.

The position offers hybrid working, with a minimum of one day per week in the Bournemouth office, alongside occasional site visits.
