Job description

We invite you to bring your talent and passion into play as you take an active role in delivering a wide range of interesting projects across the UK and internationally. If you are looking for a challenging role where you can continue to develop technically, take ownership of projects and work alongside great people, our Senior Structural Engineer position in Bristol could be a great fit.

A great place to build your career

You’ll join our Industry & Infrastructure Facilities (I&IF) team in Bristol – a growing team with a real sense of community and a strong reputation for technical excellence.

Our work spans a diverse range of sectors, including rail, aviation, energy, manufacturing, data centres and other critical infrastructure. This means you’ll have the opportunity to work on technically interesting and often complex projects, without being tied to a single sector. We work across the full project lifecycle, from early feasibility and concept development through to detailed design and construction.

You’ll also benefit from the wider expertise of Ramboll. Our I&IF teams work collaboratively across the UK and internationally, bringing together structural, civil, MEP, environmental, sustainability and other specialist disciplines to develop innovative and practical solutions.

Why Bristol?

We’re a relatively small regional team, which means you’ll get to know the people around you and have a genuine opportunity to make a difference. There is a strong sense of community, with a team of experienced engineers and technical specialists around you, providing opportunities for collaboration, knowledge sharing and professional development.

And we like to have some fun along the way. Our Bristol social team regularly organises activities ranging from padel and other sports to pub quizzes and informal team events.

Our Bristol office is ideally located close to Temple Meads and Bristol city centre, providing excellent transport links and a convenient base in the heart of Bristol.

Your role

As a Senior Structural Engineer, you will:

  • Take responsibility for the delivery of structural engineering design on projects appropriate to your experience.
  • Develop structural concepts and design solutions across a range of materials and building types.
  • Apply engineering judgement to solve complex problems and develop practical, buildable solutions.
  • Liaise with clients, architects, contractors and other members of the design team.
  • Take ownership of your work and contribute positively to project and team outcomes.
  • Support and develop less experienced engineers and technicians.
  • Contribute to innovative and sustainable design solutions, including opportunities to reduce embodied carbon and make better use of existing assets.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across the Bristol team, the wider UK I&I team and Ramboll’s international network.

What we’re looking for

For this role, we believe your starting point is:

  • Chartered with the IStructE, ICE or an international equivalent.
  • Experience working as a structural engineer within a consultancy or similar environment.
  • Good experience of structural design in steel, concrete and/or timber, together with a sound understanding of building construction.
  • Experience of working on complex or technically challenging projects.
  • An excellent communicator who can explain engineering principles clearly, whether verbally, in writing or through sketching.
  • A collaborative approach and an interest in working with other disciplines.
  • A genuine curiosity about engineering and a desire to ask, “is there a better way to do this?”
  • A passion for developing sustainable and efficient design solutions.

Experience in one or more of the following sectors would be beneficial: rail, aviation, energy, manufacturing, data centres or other critical infrastructure. Experience across multiple sectors would be advantageous.

From the moment you join Ramboll, we will support your personal and professional development. In Bristol, you’ll have access to experienced technical specialists who can support you as you develop, alongside opportunities to work on projects and with colleagues across the wider I&IF team.

You’ll have the opportunity to take increasing responsibility for projects, develop your client-facing skills and broaden your technical experience while being part of a friendly, supportive regional team.

If you’re looking for a role where you can do interesting engineering, work with great people and continue to develop your career, we’d love to hear from you.
