Job summary

American Society of Civil Engineers is seeking an experienced Structural Engineer for a major heavy civil project in the nuclear & defence sector. The role involves remote work with occasional travel to Plymouth for workshops and meetings, contributing to the upgrade of a dry dock within a high-profile site.

You will work on independent structural calculations, collaborate with the BIM team, and review RC detailing while ensuring compliance with technical, quality and safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering or related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer (MICE or MIStructE).
  • Experience at Principal Engineer or Associate level.
  • 5–10+ years in structural/heavy civil design.
  • Proven experience producing structural calculations and technical documentation.
  • Strong RC design and detailing knowledge.
  • Experience with BIM tools (Navisworks/Solibri).
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Ability to work independently within a multidisciplinary team.

Associate/Principal/Senior Structural Engineer - Heavy Civil Engineering (Nuclear & Defence)

Location: Remote with occasional travel to Plymouth for workshops and meetings

Project: Major Heavy Civil Engineering - Nuclear & Defence Infrastructure

We are seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to join a major infrastructure programme supporting the upgrade of an existing dry dock at a high-profile nuclear and defence site in Plymouth.

This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in the delivery of a complex heavy civil engineering project. We are looking for a technically strong engineer who enjoys carrying out the engineering work rather than focusing primarily on project management or team supervision.

Key Responsibilities
  • Produce and independently check structural calculations for heavy civil engineering works.
  • Work collaboratively with the BIM team to develop,review and coordinate engineering drawings and models.
  • Review reinforced concrete (RC) intent and modelling,applying a strong understanding of reinforcement detailing.
  • Interrogate and review BIM models using software such as Navisworks and Solibri.
  • Prepare high-quality technical documentation,including Technical Notes,Specifications and supporting engineering reports.
  • Develop and deliver technical presentations to support engineering workshops and design reviews.
  • Contribute to the production of works information and design deliverables throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Ensure engineering outputs meet the required technical,quality and safety standards.
Essential Requirements
  • Degree in Civil Engineering,Structural Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer (MICE or MIStructE).
  • Experience operating at Principal Engineer or Associate level.
  • Approximately 5-10+ years experience in structural or heavy civil engineering design.
  • Proven experience producing structural calculations and technical engineering documentation.
  • Strong understanding of reinforced concrete design and detailing.
  • Experience working within a BIM environment,including Navisworks and/or Solibri.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary design team.
