Working for us, you’ll be delivering sustainable infrastructure solutions that enhance life and protect our shared future.

Our people are driven by a set of strong values, based on safety, insight and collaboration.

The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Senior Structural Engineer to join our Consulting Structures Team in Nottingham. This is a hybrid role with shared office space in Nottingham, Birmingham, Telford, and Sheffield. We welcome applications from Bridge Engineers across these regions.

National Highways has named Amey Consulting as a Design partner to support the delivery of the largest and most comprehensive renewals programme that National Highways has ever launched. The £3.6bn Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF), as well as the Severn Bridges Infrastructure Maintenance (SBIM) Contract, enables National Highways to procure Design and Construction services across the Strategic Road Network for the next 6 years and beyond.

The role

As a Senior Engineer, you will support your Design Team Leader on various Structures schemes, take the lead on projects, and mentor junior engineers and technicians. Responsibilities include:

  • Leading a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions.
  • Taking ownership and leading projects from start to finish, from preparing the quotation to handover.
  • Preparing and checking designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation to meet quality, cost, and schedule criteria.
  • Overseeing junior staff tasks and ensuring their actions meet standards.
  • Contributing to the professional development of junior staff and acting as a Supervising Civil Engineer or Delegated Engineer.
  • Liaising with client and supplier representatives, attending progress meetings, and responding to queries.
  • Managing a small, locally based, single-discipline technical team and ensuring workload delivery.
  • Contributing to bid preparations and work-winning activities.
  • Driving effective Health and Safety practices within the team.
What you will bring to us
  • Experience and expertise in Bridges/Highways Structures, gained in an engineering role or equivalent.
  • Ability to produce or oversee technically sound engineering solutions complying with standards and client requirements.
  • Ownership for preparing and checking deliverables.
  • Proficiency with relevant software and analytical tools (e.g., LUSAS, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design).
  • Good commercial awareness.
  • Understanding of CDM regulations and risk assessment.
  • Experience managing hazards and risks, with appropriate mitigation.
  • Understanding of interface management and ensuring alignment across disciplines.
  • Incorporated or Chartered status or equivalent professional license is desirable and may be essential for certain contracts.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant subject or equivalent further learning.
