Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to design and analyse overhead line towers, poles, and substation supports in energy infrastructure projects in the UK. You will lead calculations, mentor junior staff, and collaborate in multi-disciplinary teams to meet programme and budget targets.

You will apply BS EN 50341, Structural Eurocodes and CDM 2015 requirements, with a focus on safe-by-design principles and client standards across SSE, SPEN, NGED, and National Grid frameworks.

Qualifications

• Degree in Structural, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
• Minimum 5 years structural engineering experience with slender, guyed, or dynamically loaded structures such as lattice towers, masts, poles, or similar.
• Working knowledge of structural steel design (BS EN 1993) and structural analysis principles.
• Experience in foundation design for overturning, uplift, and lateral loading.
• Ability to produce and check structural calculations and reports to a high technical standard.
• Chartered Engineer status or working towards (IStructE, ICE, or equivalent).
• Full UK driving licence.

• Assess tower and pole capacity for reconductoring, uprating, and line diversion or refurbishment schemes.
• Produce and check structural calculations, reports, and drawings for OHL structures.
• Use PLS-CADD / PLS-POLE or equivalent software for structural analysis of towers and poles.
• Design and check substation gantries, busbar support structures, and plant support steelwork.
• Assess existing substation structures for plant replacement or uprating projects.
• Work within multi-discipline project teams to deliver structural design outputs to programme and budget.
• Attend client design review meetings with SSE, SPEN, NGED, and National Grid.

Job description

• Design and analyse lattice towers, wood pole, and steel pole structures under the technical oversight of the Principal Structural Engineer
• Assess tower and pole capacity for reconductoring, uprating, and line diversion or refurbishment schemes
• Produce and check structural calculations, reports, and drawings for OHL structures
• Use PLS-CADD / PLS-POLE or equivalent software for structural analysis of towers and poles
• Design and check substation gantries, busbar support structures, and plant support steelwork
• Assess existing substation structures for plant replacement or uprating projects
• Work within multi-discipline project teams to deliver structural design outputs to programme and budget
• Attend and contribute to client design review meetings with SSE, SPEN, NGED, and National Grid
• Support construction phase activities including RFI responses, site queries, and structural inspection
• Contribute structural input to feasibility studies and options assessments for OHL and substation schemes
• Build OHL-specific structural competency with the Principal Structural Engineer and senior team members
• Mentor and technically support Intermediate and Graduate Engineers
• Ensure design outputs comply with BS EN 50341, structural Eurocodes, ENA technical specifications, and client standards
• Contribute to Designers Risk Assessments and structural design documentation under CDM 2015
• Apply safe-by-design principles across structural design outputs

Requirements

• Experience of substation structural design (gantries, plant support steelwork)
• Transferable experience from telecoms masts, transmission towers, bridges, or other wind-sensitive slender structures
• Working towards or holding Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with IStructE, ICE, or equivalent
• Experience of SSE, SPEN, NGED, or National Grid framework delivery
