Senior Staff Nurse Chemotherapy Day Unit

Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical and Patient Care

  1. Independently manage a group of patients within the specialty whilst working as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering individualised and personalised direct patient care.
  2. Demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care, including history taking, physical examination, and requesting diagnostic procedures.
  3. Administer prescribed medications correctly, including blood transfusions.
  4. Assess and recognise emergencies, interpret information, and lead appropriate actions.
  5. Advocate for patients to ensure a patient-centred approach and meet NHS standards.
  6. Ensure high-quality clinical care and a positive patient experience, respecting their cultural and spiritual needs.
  7. Support and guide staff in monitoring and delivering individualised care.
  8. Maintain accountability in line with the NMC code and pursue professional development.
  9. Maintain a safe environment, ensure proper storage of patient records, and promote infection control measures.
  10. Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences and support patients and carers during difficult conversations, including end-of-life care.
  11. Assess educational needs and develop plans for patients, families, and staff training.
  12. Promote evidence-based practice and contribute to service development.
  13. Ensure seamless patient care from referral to review.

Quality and Service Development

  1. Monitor and audit clinical standards to promote high-quality, cost-effective services.
  2. Participate in specialty development initiatives and improve interface with patients and staff.
  3. Utilise information systems for audits and reporting.
  4. Attend team meetings, review standards, and address safety concerns.

Education and Leadership

  1. Create a suitable learning environment for students and staff, contributing to training programs.
  2. Participate in clinical supervision and mentorship, supporting staff development and education.
  3. Contribute to national and international educational activities.

Management and Leadership

  1. Provide role model leadership, support clinical practice, and adapt to changing patient needs.
  2. Maintain accurate records and manage resources effectively.
  3. Organise work, manage caseloads, and ensure appropriate staffing levels.
  4. Lead in guideline development and staff training programs.
