A9 - Cardiothoracic Surgical Ward

A 20-bedded unit caring for patients with complex cardiac and thoracic needs, pre- and post-surgery. We look after step-downs from ITU following extensive cardiac surgery, patients with tracheostomies, and those undergoing our new Enhanced Recovery for Thoracic Surgery programme.

As a Senior Staff Nurse, you will:

  2. Ensure safe, high-quality, evidence-based patient care. Play a key role in service improvement, staff development, and patient experience.
  3. Act as a clinical role model in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, providing high-quality, effective, individualised nursing care to patients by assessing their needs and developing, implementing, and evaluating care plans without supervision.
  4. The post holder will be expected to liaise appropriately with all key members of the multi-disciplinary team and service users related to the specialty.
  5. Be responsible for all aspects of patient care including assessment, planning, delivery, and evaluation of direct patient care with supervision from senior staff.
  6. Support the ward manager to monitor the safety and quality of care for patients. Maintain accurate clinical observations of patients, utilising nursing skills and competencies.
  7. Manage a group of staff nurses and healthcare support workers within their shifts, assign delegated tasks and responsibilities as appropriate.
  8. Assist in the teaching and development of the nursing team, healthcare support workers, and pre-registration students, helping them achieve their learning outcomes.
  9. Ensure the compliance of mandatory training and appraisal requirements for delegated nursing staff and healthcare support workers.

Candidates should have substantial experience in cardiac or acute care, demonstrate excellent communication, organisational, and leadership skills, and be committed to developing both their own practice and the team around them. Bringing enthusiasm, resilience, and a passion for patient-centred care is essential.
