Following some remodelling of our workforce, we have an exciting opportunities for band 6 nurses to join our collaborative, enthusiastic and passionate team in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St Michaels Hospital.

Our NICU is a tertiary unit for the population of the South West Neonatal Operational Delivery Networks (ODN) and consists of a total of 31 cots including 15 intensive care cots, 8 high dependency cots and 8 special care cots. The unit also helps support our 16 cot Transitional Care Ward.

The unit provides care for sick newborn infants with a wide variety of medical, surgical and cardiac conditions.

Please note this vacancy is only suitable for nurses with a full UK NMC registration.

Main duties of the job

You will be expected to work alongside the Sister in charge of the unit, by taking the lead in coordinating HDU and SC. There will be an expectation that you have the ability to support and educate new and junior members of the nursing team, supporting them to develop into QIS nurses.

Other duties include:

  • Act as role models when working with other members of the ward team to ensure a high quality of care is maintained.
  • Promoting an environment conducive to the needs of our patients and their family.
  • Demonstrating excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Act as a resource of specialist knowledge and expertise to ensure optimum and appropriate care delivery to our patients and their families.
  • Undertake all appropriate aspects of nursing care required within the speciality including advanced clinical skills (having gained the appropriate training and instruction).
  • Lead and support staff and student nurses in the absence of more senior nursing grades.
  • Actively promote innovative and evidence based nursing practice
  • Supporting your team leader to complete staff appraisals and sick returns.

  • RSCN Part 8/RN (Child branch, part 15) or RN qualification
  • Current UK NMC Registration
  • Post basic certificate or related study in Neonatal Critical Care
