The Projects Team provides technical consultancy on naval vessel standards, certification, and acquisition stages, supporting Naval Authorities, Shipyards, Designers, and Acquisition Teams. In the UK, we engage with the MoD through NDP and EDP contracts, focusing on standards management and engineering services.

The team also supports naval procurement and new construction projects, both within the UK and for navies and shipyards worldwide. This role involves managing complex tasks, delivering innovative solutions, and contributing to emerging areas like submarine and autonomous vessel assurance.

The position offers opportunities to work within a respected, efficient team, solving complex naval challenges.

What we offer you

  • The opportunity to work for an organization that has a strong sense of purpose, is values-driven, and helps colleagues to develop professionally and personally through our range of people development programmes.
  • Hybrid Work

The role

  • To perform complex assessments and provide specialist advice for service delivery, research, or development work in accordance with the certificate of authorisation and scope of competence.
  • To coordinate internal and external resources to provide a timely and accurate technical service to the client and/or LR colleagues on complex defence projects.
  • To ensure all work is carried out in accordance with agreed requirements, standard project management methods, process and procedural control, and financial monitoring.
  • To support the delivery of the NDP and EDP contracts through dedicated taskings and persistent service delivery against the contract requirements.
  • To undertake Naval Authority design reviews for technical areas within own competence and to develop evidence to support certification decisions.
  • To undertake local secondments where required to support client technical design and support activities.
  • To develop relationships with, and income from, specialist areas of the naval community such as the NATG, Project Teams, or local designers, particularly in the concept and design phases.
  • To assess/recommend the time/value of the work to be undertaken for a client within an agreed cost structure and agreed commercial constraints.
  • To represent LR at appropriate technical committee forums and working groups.

What you bring

  • Must hold or be able to achieve UK SC (security clearance).
  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum of two years programme) or qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant sea-going experience as a certificated ship’s officer.

  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status (or working towards).
  • To work in accordance with professional codes of conduct and the LR Code of Ethics.
  • Previous experience of verification processes, product and rule development, and project management with experience of delivering technical services and products within defined budgets and timescales.
  • To be able to use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to optimise the application of existing and emerging technology.
  • To be able to apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to analyse and solve engineering problems.
  • To provide technical and commercial leadership within the responsibilities assigned.
  • To demonstrate effective interpersonal skills including communication in English at all levels.
  • Note that candidates applying at a Specialist Level only may also be considered.
