Job summary

EMBL-EBI is seeking an experienced Senior Solution Architect to join the Digital Experience Team. You will shape AI-enabled digital services and lead architectural direction across web apps, APIs and content platforms, working with UX, development and product colleagues.

This role blends architecture, software engineering and AI, with hands-on discovery, prototyping and delivery. You will mentor the team, set patterns, and collaborate with stakeholders across EMBL-EBI to create accessible,

Qualifications

• Significant experience in senior Solution architecture or Digital architecture.
• Strong software engineering background delivering modern digital applications and services.
• Practical experience designing AI-enabled digital services with LLM-based applications and AI orchestration.
• Understanding of modern application architecture including APIs, cloud and containerised setups, CI/CD.
• Experience leading software development teams, mentoring and building capability.
• Experience collaborating with UX, product or design to translate user needs into technical solutions.
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with pragmatic architectural decisions.
• Understanding security, privacy, accessibility, observability and responsible AI considerations.

Responsibilities

• Lead solution architecture for digital experience initiatives spanning web apps, APIs, content platforms, AI-enabled services and emerging channels.
• Shape AI-enabled digital services using LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation, intelligent agents and semantic search.
• Bridge UX and engineering translating user needs into effective, sustainable architectures.
• Provide technical leadership through discovery, prototyping and production, guiding decisions and engineering practices.
• Lead and develop the development team, mentoring and building modern software and AI capabilities.
• Design integrations across APIs, data sources and EMBL-EBI's digital infrastructure.
• Collaborate with stakeholders across EMBL-EBI to balance technical, user and organisational needs.
• Establish reusable architecture patterns and best practices for Digital Experience portfolios.
