Job summary

BP is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Trading, Shipping & Supply technology team in London. You will help build digital products across the RPT Middle Office landscape and work with traders, risk teams, finance, product managers and data engineers to enable decision making.

You will lead Data and AI solutions from discovery through deployment, including multi-agent workflows and MCP services, while shaping technical design and architecture with the team.

Qualifications

• Experience building distributed, cloud-native applications.
• Proficiency in Java, C#, Python, Scala or Go.
• Experience with modern engineering practices including TDD, CI/CD and automated testing.

The Role

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Trading, Shipping & Supply technology team in London.

You will help build and evolve digital products across our Risk, Pricing and Trading (RPT) Middle Office technology landscape.

Working closely with traders, schedulers, operators, risk analysts, finance teams, product managers, UX designers and data engineers, you will develop software that supports decision‑making across trading and middle‑office activities.

This is a hands‑on role with opportunities to shape technical design, influence architectural decisions and help evolve our technology platform.

You will also play a key role in taking Data and AI solutions from early experimentation through to production, including agentic applications, multi‑agent systems and Model Context Protocol (MCP) services.

What you'll do

Software engineering

• Build backend services, platforms and APIs that support trading and middle‑office workflows.
• Develop cloud‑native applications using modern engineering practices.
• Write maintainable code supported by automated testing.
• Improve system performance, reliability and scalability.

• Lead Data and AI solutions from discovery through deployment.
• Build agentic applications, including multi‑agent workflows and MCP services.
• Develop evaluation and monitoring capabilities to measure accuracy, reliability, safety and performance.
• Identify opportunities to apply AI and automation to real business challenges.
• Use AI‑assisted development tools to improve engineering productivity.

Working together

• Partner with traders, risk teams, operators and finance teams to understand business needs.
• Work closely with engineers, product managers, designers and data specialists.
• Share knowledge, support team growth and help improve engineering practices.
• Contribute to technical discussions and architectural decisions.

What you'll bring

Essential

• Strong software engineering fundamentals including object‑oriented design, algorithms and data structures.
• Experience building distributed, cloud‑native applications.
• Proficiency in Java, C#, Python, Scala, Go or similar languages.
• Experience with platforms such as GKE, OpenShift, EKS, AKS or Cloud Foundry.
• Experience with Kafka, RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ or similar messaging technologies.
• Experience working with PostgreSQL, MySQL or other relational databases.
• Experience building streaming and event‑driven systems.
• Knowledge of reactive programming, distributed systems and Domain‑Driven Design.
• Understanding of concurrency, networking and JVM performance.
• Experience with modern engineering practices including TDD, CI/CD and automated testing.
• Experience supporting production applications.
• Experience working in regulated or highly controlled environments.
• Experience using AI‑assisted development tools.
• Strong communication and problem‑solving skills.
• Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience.

Desirable

• Experience within energy or commodity trading environments.
• Experience with trading, risk or middle‑office platforms.
• Knowledge of Event Sourcing, CQRS or Actor Model architectures.
• Experience building AI‑enabled applications.
• Experience developing monitoring and evaluation capabilities for AI solutions.
• Experience mentoring engineers.
