Job summary

Leonardo UK seeks a Real-Time Embedded Software Engineer with several years of experience to join our defence projects in the UK. You will design and deliver high-integrity embedded software and collaborate with experienced engineers in multidisciplinary teams.

You will apply C++ or Ada, RTOS concepts, and a DevOps mindset to automate build, test, and deployment while working closely with target hardware in lab environments. A growth mindset is encouraged.

Qualifications

• Around 4 years of embedded software experience in aerospace, defence, or safety-critical domains.
• Proficient in high-integrity coding using C++ or Ada (RTCA-DO178C).
• Experience collaborating in multi-disciplinary teams.
• Interest in DevOps and automation across build, test, deployment processes.
• Willingness to work directly with target hardware in lab environments.
• Desirable RTOS development experience on Linux or VxWorks.
• Understanding of the software engineering lifecycle and eagerness to learn.

What You’ll Bring

You will contribute to designing and delivering high integrity embedded software solutions while developing your technical skills and collaborating with experienced engineers. Key skills and behaviours include:

• Experience: Around 4 years of embedded software engineering experience in aerospace, defence, or other mission- or safety-critical domains.
• High-Integrity Coding: Ability to develop robust, high-quality software (e.g., RTCA-DO178C) using object-oriented C++ or Ada.
• Collaboration: Work effectively within multi-disciplinary teams and learn from senior engineers.
• DevOps Mindset: Interest in automation across build, test, and deployment processes.
• Hands-On Integration: Willingness to work directly with target hardware in lab environments.
• RTOS Development (Desirable): Exposure to real-time embedded applications on Linux or VxWorks RTOS.
• Lifecycle Awareness: Understanding of the software engineering lifecycle—from requirements through delivery.
• Growth Mindset: Eagerness to learn, adapt, and contribute to best practices.
