Job Description:

About the Role

As a Tech Lead on Roku’s Observability team, you will take ownership of a platform that ingests terabytes of telemetry data daily and supports hundreds of millions of active time series. This role offers the opportunity to lead engineering efforts that directly impact the stability, performance, and usability of our observability stack. You’ll drive the technical direction for integrating open-source observability tools at scale, standardise monitoring practices across teams, and collaborate closely with platform and application engineers to ensure seamless, efficient, and tailored solutions. Your work will include building automation to simplify onboarding, contributing to the CNCF ecosystem, and delivering high-quality, scalable infrastructure that empowers developers across Roku. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who thrives in a fast-moving environment and is passionate about solving complex challenges with clarity and purpose.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Scaling and Innovating: Enhance and optimise Roku's observability stack to handle terabytes of data daily and hundreds of millions of active series, while introducing Roku-specific features and innovations.
  • Tooling and Standardisation: Work with the Platform team to identify, standardise, and improve observability tools as part of a cohesive solution.
  • Stability and Performance: Invest in making the observability platform more stable, performant, and reliable for all users.
  • Open Source Contributions: Contribute new open-source tools and improvements back to the CNCF ecosystem.
  • Automation and Usability: Build automation around observability tools to simplify onboarding for developers (dashboards, alerts, traces, etc.).
  • Collaboration and Engagement: Partner with engineering teams to build solutions that assist in a better ‘out of the box’ experience and drive innovation.
  • Extensive Experience: 8+ years of experience in Infrastructure Engineering and/or DevOps, with a focus on observability platforms.
  • Large-Scale Expertise: Proven experience designing and operating observability platforms that process massive amounts of data (metrics, logs, and traces) to provide actionable insights.
  • Tool Mastery: Expertise in deploying and operating open-source observability tools at scale, such as Prometheus, Grafana, Thanos, Loki, Tempo, or similar solutions like Cortex, Mimir, or the ELK stack.
  • Standards Knowledge: Familiarity with open standards like OpenTelemetry, OpenTracing, and OpenMetrics.
  • Kubernetes & Istio: Deep understanding of Kubernetes and Istio architectures, and the ability to contribute improvements for scalability and integration.
  • Collaboration Skills: Strong ability to engage with customers and stakeholders to deliver tailored observability solutions.
  • Cloud Expertise: Hands-on experience with AWS, GCP, and/or Azure.
  • Development Proficiency: 4+ years of experience with programming languages such as Go, Python, or similar. While we primarily use Go, we welcome experience with other languages if you're open to focusing on Go in this role.
  • Education: B.S. or M.S. degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.

The Roku Culture

Roku is a great place for people who want to work in a fast-paced environment where everyone is focused on the company's success rather than their own. We try to surround ourselves with people who are great at their jobs, who are easy to work with, and who keep their egos in check. We appreciate a sense of humor. We believe a fewer number of very talented folks can do more for less cost than a larger number of less talented teams. We're independent thinkers with big ideas who act boldly, move fast and accomplish extraordinary things through collaboration and trust. In short, at Roku you'll be part of a company that's changing how the world watches TV.

We have a unique culture that we are proud of. We think of ourselves primarily as problem-solvers, which itself is a two-part idea. We come up with the solution, but the solution isn't real until it is built and delivered to the customer. That penchant for action gives us a pragmatic approach to innovation, one that has served us well since 2002.
