About Homeprotect
Cover for Almost every Home

We founded Homeprotect on a simple principle - to provide protection to people underserved by the home insurance industry. Since 2002, we've been combining smart technology with real human expertise to protect hundreds of thousands of unique homes across the UK, and we're just getting started.

If you're someone who loves solving interesting problems, taking ownership and working with a team that aims high, speaks up and lifts each other, Homeprotect is a place where you can do meaningful work, grow your career and make a real difference for our customers.

What It's Like To Work Here

Our customers come from all walks of life and so do our people. We're a small but perfectly formed team of insurance specialists, technologists, data scientists and customer champions - all bringing individual expertise, an appetite for innovation and a shared ambition to protect the homes and things people love.

We work at pace, but we trust our people to work in a way that brings out their best. You'll collaborate closely across teams, have real ownership from day one and see the impact you have first-hand with flexible working to help you balance the needs of your role with the rhythm of your life.

We've been recognised as a Great Place to Work UK for seven consecutive years - most recently ranked 29th nationally, jumping 71 places in a single year.

ROLE PURPOSE

Customer & Claims brings together three connected parts of Homeprotect's business: the shared digital experience customers and partners use across every channel, the tools our operations teams use to support customers directly, and the end-to-end claims journey, from a customer first reporting a loss through to their claim being settled. It's the team most responsible for how Homeprotect actually feels to a customer, whichever door they come through.

Fairer Finance rates us as the UK's most transparent Home Insurer. This team plays a central part in that reputation: the systems you build directly shape how trustworthy and easy Homeprotect feels at the moments that matter most to customers.

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to lead technical delivery within this team and raise the capability of the engineers around them. You'll take ownership of complex, customer-facing systems and claims workflows, make sound architectural decisions with minimal guidance, and be a trusted technical voice for a domain that touches nearly every interaction a customer has with Homeprotect.

Success in this role means the systems you own are reliable, well understood and easy for others to build on, and the engineers around you are visibly better because you're on the team.

Key Responsibilities
Technical Ownership & Delivery
  • Lead the design, delivery and operation of complex features and systems across the domain, whether that's customer-facing journeys, operational tooling for our support teams, or the claims lifecycle, depending on where you're needed most.
  • Make significant architectural and technical decisions independently, and document the reasoning behind them so others can build on the work without needing you present.
  • Lead delivery of complex, often cross-functional initiatives, balancing speed, quality and long-term sustainability.
  • Identify and address technical debt and risk in the domain before it becomes a business or customer problem.
Product & Business Partnership
  • Develop a deep understanding of how customers interact with Homeprotect across channels, and of what happens when something goes wrong and a claim is made, and use that understanding to help shape what the team builds.
  • Partner with the domain's Product Manager and Engineering Manager to spot opportunities and risks early, before they turn into problems.
  • Bring a domain perspective into technical decisions, and a technical perspective into product decisions, particularly where customer experience and claims handling intersect.
Technical Leadership & Mentoring
  • Coach and mentor other engineers, raising the technical standard of the team through code review, pairing and everyday guidance.
  • Be a trusted voice on technical decisions, sought out by others in the team.
  • Create an environment where less experienced engineers can grow and do their best work.
Continuous Improvement
  • Drive improvements to engineering practices, testing, deployment and observability within the domain.
  • Continuously grow your own capability and that of the engineers around you.
  • Contribute to Homeprotect's wider engineering standards as they mature.
Essential
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
  • Proven experience as a senior software engineer, owning delivery of complex systems or cross-functional technical initiatives, not just individual features.
  • Strong track record of making sound architectural and design decisions with minimal guidance, and clearly explaining the reasoning behind them.
  • Experience mentoring and raising the technical capability of other engineers, through code review, pairing and everyday coaching.
  • Comfortable working across the stack relevant to customer-facing systems: frontend and backend, or deep expertise in one with a working knowledge of the other.
  • Strong hands-on experience in at least one modern backend language, such as C# or Java (or a comparable object-oriented language), and familiarity with a modern frontend framework.
  • Deep, hands-on understanding of modern software engineering practices: continuous integration and deployment, automated testing, observability and cloud-native development.
  • Experience operating production systems, in a public cloud environment such as Azure or GCP, that need to be reliable, secure and performant.
  • Strong communication skills, able to build trust with both engineers and non-technical colleagues.
Desirable
  • Experience in general insurance, financial services or another regulated industry.
  • Experience building customer-facing digital journeys at scale, or systems supporting operational or customer service teams.
  • Experience with claims handling, case management, or similarly regulated end-to-end business processes.
  • Exposure to event-driven or distributed systems.
  • Experience using AI-assisted engineering tools to improve engineering productivity.

All colleagues are expected to uphold the FCA Individual Conduct Rules (1–6) and act with integrity, due skill and care, openness with regulators and a genuine commitment to delivering good outcomes for our customers.

You'll work within approved processes and authority limits, keep accurate and auditable records, protect data under UK GDPR and our information security policies, elevate risks and exceptions promptly, report incidents, breaches and any financial crime or sanctions concerns (including via whistleblowing), support vulnerable customers with reasonable adjustments, and complete all mandatory training to maintain competence.
