Job summary

Medtronic is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the real-time video processing team in London. You will develop high-performance video and AI processing pipelines for operating room applications, leveraging hardware acceleration and multi-threaded C++.

You will work with a multidisciplinary team, design robust software for medical devices, and travel to the London office three days per week onsite. Strong C++17-23, real-time video experience, and writing clear, maintainable code are

  • Capability to work independently, driving development from concept to production.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to commute to London 3 days/week onsite.

A Day in the Life

Medtronic Digital Technologies is creating ambitious new products that bring connectivity, real-time guidance, and decision support to the operating room. Working closely with other teams across Medtronic, we are creating a connected ecosystem and leveraging the state of the art in computer vision to provide the most comprehensive view of surgery. As a Senior Software Engineer working on the real-time video processing team, you’ll be helping to develop high-performance video and AI processing pipelines for use in the operating room. We’re looking for someone experienced with real-time video manipulation and parallel processing who is comfortable working in a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:

  • Leverage hardware acceleration to develop high-performance, low-latency video capture, processing, AI inference, visualization and streaming software.
  • Design, implement, and optimise video processing pipelines running on computing systems deployed in the operating room.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to develop robust and safe-by-design software for a medical device.
  • Maintain a high level of quality and reliability in submitted code and participate in team code reviews .

Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • Excellent C++ development & debugging skills with C++17-23, multi-threading, inter-process communication and performance optimization.
  • Excellent knowledge of software design principles and C++ design patterns.
  • Experience with real time video pipelines.
  • Ability to write clear, maintainable and well-documented code.
  • Capability to work independently, driving development from concept to production.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Must be able to commute frequently to London-based office; 3 days per week onsite.

Preferred skills include experience with NVIDIA NPP, Intel MKL, and BLAS libraries; experience developing or implementing real-time image processing algorithms using hardware acceleration; experience with medical-grade quality processes; knowledge of video compression and coding standards such as H.264, H.265, and VP9; and good knowledge of Linux.
