Job summary

Light & Wonder in Manchester is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to build and evolve a next‑generation cross‑platform game framework powering experiences across web, mobile, desktop, and land-based platforms.

You will design core framework components, influence architecture, and tackle performance challenges while collaborating with game developers, QA, and platform teams in an Agile environment. The role is based in the Manchester studio with office attendance.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience building complex, scalable software systems.
  • Strong OO programming skills in TypeScript, C#, C++, or similar.
  • Hands-on experience with Unity, Unreal, or equivalent engines.
  • Experience in Agile teams delivering iteratively.
  • Collaborative and strong cross-disciplinary communication.

Responsibilities

  • Build and evolve a cross-platform game framework for web, mobile, desktop, and land-based gaming.
  • Design and develop core framework components used across multiple games, teams, and technologies.
  • Influence architectural direction to ensure scalable, maintainable solutions.
  • Solve complex performance and optimisation challenges across platforms and languages.
  • Write clean, high-quality code and champion engineering best practices.

Job description

Salary: £34,000 - 74,000 per year

Requirements:
  • We are looking for proven experience building complex, scalable, and maintainable software systems.
  • We need strong object-oriented programming skills and proficiency in at least one language such as TypeScript, C#, C++, or similar.
  • We want hands‑on experience working with modern game engines such as Unreal, Unity, or equivalent technologies.
  • We require experience working within Agile software development teams and delivering solutions through iterative development practices.
  • We value a pragmatic, performance-focused approach to problem solving, with the ability to balance technical excellence and commercial requirements.
  • We need strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Nice to have: experience in game development, with a strong understanding of game architecture, development lifecycles, and platform considerations.
  • Nice to have: knowledge of casino gaming, iGaming, or other regulated software environments.
  • Nice to have: experience with web technologies including JavaScript, TypeScript, WebGL, and browser performance optimisation.
  • Nice to have: understanding of mobile development and performance optimisation for Android and iOS.
  • Nice to have: experience with graphics programming, rendering pipelines, shaders, or engine‑level performance improvements.
  • Nice to have: knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, build systems, development toolchains, and extending game engines through native modules or SDKs.
  • Nice to have: a passion for emerging technologies and their application within gaming.
