Job summary

Elsevier is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to contribute to the Enterprise API Platform. You will participate in design discussions, develop test driven code, pair with teammates, mentor juniors and support the existing API Platforms.

It aims to provide a good developer experience for API users both inside and outside Elsevier. Responsibilities include onboarding APIs, improving the dev portal, and rapidly resolving support requests.

Qualifications

• Expertise in Java and JavaScript with Groovy and JSP experience.
• In-depth knowledge of Maven/Gradle build tools and PostgreSQL.
• Experience using AWS via Terraform and cloud-native observability tools.
• Hands-on with Docker, Kubernetes, and related tooling.

Responsibilities

• Interface with technical teams to finalize requirements and designs.
• Develop test-driven code and review complex component implementations.
• Fix complex bugs and translate requirements into software designs.
• Collaborate across teams to implement processes, reviews, and best practices.
• Train junior engineers and support various development environments.

About our Team

Our team is a Shared Services team that provides API Platform capabilities to all of Elsevier. API teams can onboard APIs, manage their lifecycles and monitor usage. For public APIs, customers can create credentials through the self-service developer portal. The Platform also offers AI Gateways, enabling API teams to onboard MCP servers and tools, manage credentials for these resources, and track usage through dashboards.

About the Role

As a Senior Software Engineer you are expected to participate in technical discussions to come up with a design to meet Product Requirements, develop test driven code, pair with team members, mentor juniors and support the existing API Platforms. Within this team/role you will look after a legacy and new Enterprise API Platform for Elsevier. It aims to provide a good developer experience for anyone using the Platform both within and outside of Elsevier. Smooth onboarding of APIs to the Platform, ease of use of the dev portal for the customers and rapid resolution of support requests are the Team's goals.

Responsibilities

• Interface with other technical personnel or team members to finalize requirements.
• Write and review portions of detailed specifications for the development of complex system components.
• Complete complex bug fixes.
• Work closely with other development team members to understand complex product requirements and translate them into software designs.
• Successfully implement development processes, coding best practices, and code reviews.
• Operate in various development environments (Agile, Waterfall, etc.) while collaborating with key stakeholders.
• Resolve complex technical issues as necessary.
• Train entry-level software engineers as directed by department management, ensuring they are knowledgeable in critical aspects of their roles.

Requirements

• Expertise in development languages including but not limited to: Java, JavaScript, Groovy, JSP, HTML, XML, SQL and bash.
• Knowledge and experience of build tools – Maven and Gradle
• Knowledge and experience of relational DBMS – Postgresdb
• Knowledge of using AWS services via Terraform - Secrets Manager, Kinesis Firehose, S3, Open Search etc
• Knowledge and experience of configuring and using New Relic, Kibana for observing metrics and configuring alerts.
• Knowledge and experience of using Docker, containers, helm, kustomize to set up and manage Kubernetes applications.
• Knowledge and experience of using kubectl, k9s and similar tools to observe and manage k8s resources
• A bonus if you have Knowledge of networks –AWS ACM certificates, VPC’s, transit gateways etc
