We are keen to add a Principal Software Development Engineer - SRE to our Nottingham-based team. The primary focus is to manage the evolution and reliability of both existing and in-development service applications. This role will act as a Technical lead of developers responsible for maintaining and improving back-end services for our most critical customer and/or data applications within the cloud.

We’re looking for an experienced professional whose technical skill set primarily includes technologies/frameworks such as Java and who has a passion for software engineering, inspiring those they work with both onshore and offshore. AWS is Capital One's hosting platform of choice, so experience with cloud-based architecture is advantageous.

Our Principal Software Development Engineers are individuals who can lead by example, build strong relationships with stakeholders, and navigate ambiguity and complexity effectively.

What you’ll do

• Lead a team of engineers responsible for maintaining and improving back-end services within the cloud environment.
• Help shape and deliver team goals and vision through hands-on engineering.
• Promote engineering best practices (Operational Excellence, Security, Quality, Resilience) and set standards across teams.
• Drive innovation within your team and contribute to your technical domain.
• Deliver projects from inception to design and implementation.
• Estimate, scope, and plan work within an agile environment.

What we’re looking for

• Experience running microservices on container orchestration architectures in production.
• Passion for testing frameworks and their value.
• Knowledge of monitoring & logging tools like NewRelic or Logzio for troubleshooting distributed systems.
• Strong experience in back-end architectural and design patterns.
• Ability to troubleshoot and pre-empt operational issues successfully.

Where and how you'll work

This is a permanent position based at our Nottingham Head Office with a hybrid working model—working from the office three days a week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays) and remotely the rest of the time. Flexible working arrangements are available.
