Overview

Senior Site Chemist - Contaminated Soil and Aggregates

Location: Dagenham, UK

Salary: circa £40,000pa (DOE)

My client is seeking an experienced Senior Site Chemist to join their busy waste treatment facility in Dagenham. This role focuses on contaminated soils, aggregates, and construction & demolition (C&D) waste, ensuring all operations comply with environmental and health & safety regulations.

You'll need solid technical knowledge of contaminated materials, asbestos, hydrocarbons, lead, and similar hazardous substances, along with strong site-based compliance experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee waste acceptance and classification of contaminated soils and aggregates.
  • Ensure full compliance with site permits, WAC and environmental regulations.
  • Validate incoming loads and documentation for hazardous materials (asbestos, hydrocarbons, lead, etc.).
  • Maintain accurate records and waste traceability from receipt to final destination.
  • Conduct inspections and compliance checks to uphold safety and environmental standards.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors and regulators on waste classification and acceptance.
  • Support continual improvement in site operations and environmental performance.
Requirements
  • Degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, or related field.
  • Strong experience in hazardous waste, contaminated land or C&D waste environments.
  • Expert understanding of contaminated aggregates and associated hazardous materials.
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations, WAC testing and waste classification (EWC, HP codes).
  • Proven ability to work safely and efficiently on an operational site.
  • Excellent organisation and communication skills.
  • Forklift licence desirable but not essential.
