Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Practice
- To act as a role model of expert clinical practice in the theatre area.
- To be an experienced skilled practitioner, enthusiastic, inspirational and with transferable skills, displayed when regularly undertaking clinical duties. .
- To lead and be responsible for a team comprising qualified and unqualified staff.
- To communicate with carers and relatives to ensure individualized patient centered care is provided.
- Maintain expected standards of documentation including paper and computer records such as CERNER and in accordance with the NMC Standard for Records and Record Keeping. Participate in ensuring the timely and effective use, entry and validation of CERNER care records.
- To foster collaborative relationships and communication within and between the multi-disciplinary team.
- To promote the development of evidenced based peri & post-operative practice.
- To ensure the delivery of high standards of peri-operative care to all patients, monitoring this through spot checks, audits and clinical quality indicators outcome measures.
- Have specific departmental responsibility for one of the following where required: Health and Safety, Incident Notifications, Risk Assessments, Infection Control and TSSU issues, and to be responsible for regularly communicating performance against these at staff meetings.
- To liaise with other departments in the hospital e.g. Estates, Facilities, Finance, IT, Human Resources to ensure that services supplied are of an acceptable standard and problems identified are registered and addressed. Ongoing or serious problems must be escalated to the Matron.
Education and Development
- To ensure that all staff have an annual personal development plan.
- To maintain records of performance reviews, study days, competency assessments of staff within the team
- To contribute to the training needs analysis which reflects the future needs of the service in collaboration with the Theatre Practice Educator & the Matron for the Day Surgery Unit.
- To teach and promote a learning environment and facilitate others to develop informal teaching skills.
- To keep up to date with current peri-operative literature and guidance and act as a clinical resource and advisor to staff and promoting evidence based practice.
- To liaise with the Matron for the Day Surgery Unit, specialist Nurses, surgeons, anesthetists', Learning Resource Centre staff, and external agencies to explore and ensure appropriate educational opportunities for personal, professional and service development are provided.
- To ensure that theatre staff support and nurture pre-registration students in meeting their learning objectives.
- To provide opportunities and supervise health care assistants to develop their peri-operative skills and knowledge.
Communication
- Ensure all communication, which may be complex, contentious or sensitive, is undertaken in a responsive and inclusive manner, focusing on improvement and ways to move forward.
- Ensure all communication is presented appropriately to the different recipients, according to levels of understanding, type of communication being imparted and possible barriers such as language, culture, understanding or physical or mental health conditions.
Professional Development:
- To participate in own appraisal, developing a Personal Development Plan (PDP) in liaison with the Matron.
- To attend appropriate educational programmes to develop his/her self and team in accordance with the needs of the service.
- To adhere at all times to the NMC / HPC Code of Professional Conduct, and any other NMC guidelines and regulations.

Education and qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse/ODP
- Management experience
- Mentorship Programme
- Post registration education or willing to undertake or have completed leadership course
Desirable criteria
- Master's degree in health or related subject
Experience
Essential criteria
- Minimum 5 years post registration experience in orthopaedics and hand scrub speciality
- Experience of managing patients undergoing surgical procedures
- Management and development of a team staff
- Experience working with Cerner or relevant theatre Management system
Desirable criteria
- Audit and research experience
- Experience in change management
Skills and knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge and inspirational
- Ability to share, implement and monitor peri-operative standards within theatres

- Competent IT skills to utilize Microsoft office
- A thorough understanding of NHS trust and theatre objectives and performance targets
- Evidence of ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team
- Ability to plan and prioritise own and others workload and under pressure
- An understanding of change management techniques and ability to manage change effectively
- A good understanding and demonstration of customer service and involvement in improving patients' experience
