Main Duties of the Job

An exciting opportunity has arisen at the University Hospital Southampton Foundation Trust (UHS) for a General Intensive Care Senior Sister/Senior Charge Nurse on a permanent basis. We are looking for someone with proven specialist critical care knowledge and skills to join our forward-thinking critical care senior team.

Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Promote high standards of patient-centered care within the ICU.
  • Support the Matron in analyzing, monitoring, and implementing safety and effectiveness actions aligned with Trust values.
  • Manage daily operations and service delivery, including line management and development of the nursing team.
  • Ensure smooth unit operations, working as a key decision-maker with the multidisciplinary team, focusing on patient safety, experience, and quality assurance.

Requirements

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Degree-level education with ongoing professional development.
  • Extensive experience at Band 6 in an Acute Adult Critical Care Unit.
  • Compassionate approach with the ability to meet clinical operational demands.
  • Opportunities for active participation in critical care at various levels, with a varied case mix and a focus on role development.

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Experience (Essential)

  • First Level Registered Nurse on the NMC Register.
  • Recognized mentorship qualification and Sign Off mentor experience.
  • Degree or working towards it.
  • Completion of relevant specialty courses.
  • Experience supporting learners and promoting effective learning in practice.
  • Extensive specialty experience, including at Band 6 level.
  • Clinical leadership and management experience.
  • Evidence of CPD and evidence-based practice.
  • Expert clinical skills, ability to prioritize, and flexible working hours.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Management course or equivalent.
  • Experience as a Sign Off mentor or practice assessor.
  • Staff development and succession planning experience.
  • Report writing experience.
