Job summary

The Leeds Neonatal Service delivers care to over 1400 babies per year, with units at LGI and SJUH and a total of 64 cots cross city. The Band 7 post requires leadership of about 170 WTE nurses and support staff, coordinating units across shifts and providing clinical and managerial leadership to ensure compassionate, safe and high-quality care.

The role operates within a 24/7 shift pattern and cross-site responsibilities.

Qualifications

  • Experience in Neonatal Intensive Care and Neonatal Surgery.
  • Band 7 leadership and performance management experience.
  • Ability to co-ordinate units across shifts and manage nursing establishment.

Responsibilities

  • Co-ordinate the units on a shift-to-shift basis and manage the nursing establishment.

The jobholder will carry 24 hour continuing responsibility for the effective and efficient management of the ward/department. They will provide professional, clinical, managerial leadership and supervision for the nursing team. The jobholder is responsible for developing and maintaining a ward or department's philosophy that has the patient at the centre of compassionate safe and quality care delivery. Through managing the administrative and financial aspects of the ward, the jobholder will ensure cost effective use of resources.

Why you should join our Team

The Leeds Neonatal Service delivers care to over 1400 babies per year. We have a Neonatal Unit at LGI and SJUH and together can care for 48 patient's cross city. These cots are a mixture of Intensive, High Dependency, Special and Surgical Care. With LGI providing the level 3 intensive, high dependency and special care. We also have a 12 bedded Transitional Care Unit on the St James's Hospital Site and 2 Transitional care cots integrated into the post-natal ward on the Leeds General Infirmary Site.

Current service comprise 64 cots cross city. The role requires management of approximately 170 whole time equivalent nurses and support staff in partnership with the Lead Nurses and Matrons for the Service. The jobholder will coordinate the units on a shift by shift basis. The job holder will work cross city and will be expected to cover a 24/7 shift system.

What You Will Bring To The Role
  • Provide leadership to the clinical team
  • Support and inspire staff to provide efficient, effective, safe, quality care to patients
  • Deliver a positive patient experience
  • Promote the building of effective teams and collaboration between teams
  • Anticipate problems and take preventative or mitigating actions, or have contingency plans available
  • Work with Matron to lead the development of ward/department nursing practice, reflecting the Clinical Service Unit and Trust Business Plans
  • Work with the Matron and/or Head of Nursing to suggest and develop new roles/ways of working
  • Delegate and empower staff whilst maintaining overall, continuing responsibility and accountability
  • Line manage the nursing team, including individual and team performance, attendance management and workforce planning
  • Ensure the effective deployment of staff is mapped against the flow of patients to provide safe and effective care
  • Support and participate in local and trustwide recruitment events
  • Manage the use of bank and agency
  • Investigate and respond to accidents, complaints, untoward incidents and and other significant events
  • Deliver an effective, safe, quality service within budgetary envelope
  • Raise and respond to concerns with regards to risk, danger, malpractice or wrongdoing by following the LTHT whistle blowing policy and supporting processes
  • Deputising for Matron in their absence
