An exciting secondment opportunity has arisen for a Senior Sister to lead the Short Stay Surgery ward at Frimley Park Hospital. This busy elective surgical unit delivers care across a wide range of specialities, and we are seeking a resilient, enthusiastic, and dynamic nurse leader to take on this rewarding role.

As Senior Sister, you will play a vital role in the day-to-day management and clinical leadership of the ward, ensuring the highest standards of patient care and safety. You will lead by example, working alongside your team to provide visible senior clinical support, mentor staff, and uphold the Trust’s core values.

In This Position, You Will Be Responsible For

  • Providing clear leadership and direction to nursing staff on a busy elective surgical ward
  • Championing high-quality care, patient safety, and positive patient experience
  • Managing operational aspects of the ward, including staffing, patient flow, and resource management
  • Upholding and modelling the Trust values, challenging poor practice and celebrating team successes
  • Participating in the Senior Duty Nurse rota, contributing to wider site management

Main duties of the job

This role requires close working relationships with a wide range of the multi-disciplinary/speciality teams, the Consultants, Heads of Nursing, Matrons, Ward Managers and the Clinical Site Management team. To succeed in this role, you will need to possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills. You will need to have the ability to deal with challenging situations in a fast-paced environment in a professional and calm manner.

You must have a proven ability in supervising, managing and controlling the activities of a unit in an effective and efficient manner. You will be a clinical role model and have a willingness to develop the team as well as your own professional growth. You will have excellent communication skills and high clinical standards with a passion to make a difference for patients and staff alike.

You must have recent experience of working in a senior nurse role within UGI, Colorectal, Urology, Breast, ENT or Gynae surgery and must be able to demonstrate clinical knowledge and skills in caring for patients, including acutely unwell and deteriorating patients, and patients on elective pathways. You will be knowledgeable regarding the speciality, plus fully understand governance and its importance in promoting and maintaining a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff and proactively monitor and feedback compliance.

Desirable criteria

  • Successful completion of a leadership and development programme equivalent to the Internal Band 6 Leadership and Development programme

Skills & Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Able to perform clinical duties commensurate to that of the role e.g. IV medications, Cannulation
  • Ability to assess patients; develop, implement, and evaluate a plan of care.
  • Ability to safely administer medicines in accordance with NMC Guidelines for the administration of medicines (2002).
  • Ability to support professional development and create a learning environment.

Desirable criteria

  • Computer literacy with electronic records experience (EPIC)
  • Experience of budgetary management
  • Experience of managing a clinical area
  • Completion of Yellow Belt or knowledge of continuous improvement methodology.

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Relevant level of experience as a Band 6 in a surgical ward
  • Experience of managing a team and can effectively function as part of a multi-disciplinary team

  • Experience working at Band 7 level
  • Evidence of clinical competence in area of Colorectal, UGI, Urology, Breast, ENT and Gynae surgery
