Job summary

Lumentum is seeking a Shift Engineer for the Caswell site in Northampton. You will provide equipment engineering support to Manufacturing and Process Engineering, performing fault finding, maintenance and improvement initiatives to maximise uptime.

The role involves handling hazardous chemicals and may require SCBA use. You will supervise technicians, mentor engineers, coordinate with suppliers and ensure safety compliance across shifts.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years experience in a semiconductor manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to follow documented procedures with minimal supervision.
  • Experience documenting procedures and generating work instructions, risk assessments and method statements.
  • Strong time-management and organisational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and preventive maintenance of specialist semiconductor processing equipment.
  • Oversee chemical, gases and spare parts control, chemical fills and waste management.
  • Instruct and mentor equipment technicians and junior equipment engineers.
  • Liaison with equipment and spares suppliers and service providers (including supervision of external contractors).
  • Develop and deliver preventative maintenance strategies to maximise equipment utilization, OEE and up-time.
  • Ensure that team members are motivated towards achieving objectives and that objectives are clearly communicated.
  • Ensure cross training of Equipment Technicians and Engineers to meet requirements.
  • Drive Total Productive Maintenance practices within the Engineering group.
  • Define, allocate and monitor progress of key improvement projects in an 8-step format and complete timely.
  • Produce monthly reports detailing equipment performance and project status for Engineering Management.
  • Represent the group at production, planning and scrap meetings.
  • Work with supply chain to manage Wafer Fab Equipment spare parts inventory and stock levels.
  • Adhere to site safety and environmental procedures.
  • Support site emergency response function.
  • Provide shift cover as required.

Role: Shift Engineer, Wafer Fab Equipment

Location: Caswell, Northampton

Reports to: Wafer Fab Equipment Engineering (Sustaining) Manager

Summary

You will provide Equipment Engineering support to the Manufacturing and Process Engineering groups within the Wafer Fab at the Caswell site. This will include day-to-day production equipment support, fault finding & repair of production equipment and associated systems, driving improvement initiatives to increase uptime & OEE, working with specialist tools that process various hazardous chemicals and, potentially, the use of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

Key Responsibilities
  • Repair and preventative maintenance (PMs) of specialist semiconductor processing equipment, including any preparation work and routine cleans.
  • Oversee chemical, gases and spare parts control, chemical fills and waste management.
  • Instruct and mentor equipment technicians and junior equipment engineers in various aspects of equipment engineering.
  • Liaison with equipment and spares suppliers and specialist service providers (including the supervision of external contractors and field service engineers).
  • Develop and deliver preventative maintenance strategies to maximise equipment utilization, OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) and up-time.
  • Ensure that that team members are motivated towards achieving objectives of the group, and ensuring objectives are clearly communicated to them where necessary.
  • Ensure cross training of Equipment Technicians and Engineers in order to meet engineering and manufacturing requirements.
  • Responsible for driving Total Productive Maintenance practices within the Engineering group.
  • Define, allocate and to monitor the progress of key improvement projects in an 8-step format and to ensure that these are completed in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for producing monthly reports detailing equipment performance, status of key improvement projects and metrics which will be circulated to the Engineering Management team.
  • Responsible for representing the group at production, planning and scrap meetings.
  • Work with supply chain to add the Wafer Fab Equipment spare parts inventory into stores and help manage stock levels and critical spares.
  • Adhere to all site safety and environmental procedures.
  • Support of site emergency response function.
  • Provide shift cover as required.

Qualifications
  • An HNC/HND or Degree in an engineering discipline (or equivalent) and/or 10 years of directly related experience.
Skills
  • At least 5 years experience within a semiconductor manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to follow documented procedures without close supervision.
  • Ability to document procedures, including experience of generating new work instructions, risk assessments and method statements.
  • Good time-management and organizational skills.
  • Computer literate with the ability to use the Microsoft Office suite of applications.
  • Experience of working in a team and managing stakeholders.
  • Experienced in the maintenance and repair of Semiconductor manufacturing equipment including, but not limited to the following vendors: ASML, Trikon/SPTS, OiPT, Palomar, Temscal, Leybold, Leica, SemiTool.
Other Requirements
  • Flexible approach to working hours, meeting the needs of the business and able to work overtime as required. There may be a requirement work a rotating shift pattern.
  • Working within a cleanroom environment with the prerequisite use of cleanroom clothing.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Excellent communication skills including written and spoken English.
  • Must be eligible to work in the UK.
  • The ability to attend site is essential, the site is situated in a rural location and is not served by public transport.
