Job description

Job Description

We're Hiring: Senior Scientist – Solid State Batteries

Location: Milton Park Oxfordshire

Agratas is on a mission to power a more sustainable future. As a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Sons, we are designing, developing, and manufacturing cutting-edge lithium-ion batteries for the mobility and energy sectors. Backed by Tata’s legacy and scale, we’re a bold and ambitious scale-up with a start-up mindset—and we’re just getting started.

At our state-of-the-art R&D facility in Oxfordshire, we’re building something special. Now, we’re looking to expand our talented Science Lab team with a passionate Senior Solid State Battery Scientist ready to drive innovation at the forefront of battery technology.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Scientist to join our cutting-edge Solid-State Battery R&D team. This is a rare opportunity to play a pivotal role in the advancement of semi-solid or all-solid-state battery (SSSB/ASSB) technologies at the frontier of next- energy storage.

This role is ideal for a driven and pragmatic innovator who thrives on solving complex challenges and delivering real-world results—someone who has already made meaningful contributions to the field through hands-on industry experience.

What You'll Do

As a Senior Scientist, you will:

  • Design, develop, and optimize key components of SSSB/ASSB cells, including catholytes, anolytes, separators, and high-capacity active materials.
  • Lead the assembly and electrochemical testing of R&D-scale pouch cells.
  • Investigate failure modes and develop strategies to improve cell performance and safety.
  • Address manufacturability and scale-up challenges with practical, data-driven solutions.
  • Collaborate across cross-functional R&D teams to drive interface engineering innovations.
  • Contribute to the development and protection of IP where applicable.

What We're Looking For

  • Direct, hands-on experience in the SSSB or ASSB space, ideally at a globally recognized battery innovator.
  • Proven ability to design and test multilayer pouch cells or equivalent.
  • Deep understanding of current trends in cell design, materials chemistry, component integration, and stack pressure optimization.
  • IP knowledge (e.g., patent filing, FTO analysis) is a plus.
  • We are not currently seeking academic candidates unless they bring significant industrial experience.

Ideal Background

A formal qualification in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related Engineering field is advantageous but secondary to practical experience.

Prior roles at industry-leading battery developers or manufacturers will be highly regarded.

Why Join Us?

This is a chance to influence the future of battery technology from the inside—working with some of the best minds in the field in a fast-paced, purpose-driven environment. We offer competitive compensation, flexible banding for the right talent, and significant career progression opportunities.

At Agratas, we do more than build batteries—we build futures. This is your chance to join a fast-moving business that combines the agility of a start-up with the resources and stability of Tata Sons.

Here, your work will directly contribute to the clean energy transition. You'll be supported, celebrated, and empowered to do the best work of your career—while being your authentic self.
