Job Description:

At Cancer Research UK, we exist to beat cancer

Cancer Research UK’s Drug Discovery team is looking for an experienced and passionate Senior Scientist to lead in designing, prosecuting, and analyzing biochemical assays, including bespoke mechanistic data and High Throughput Screening activities.

This role offers an opportunity for an experienced Senior Scientist to lead drug discovery projects, collaborate with academic PIs and partners, and contribute to the development of HTS strategies using automated robotics systems. The team is multidisciplinary, providing ample opportunities for learning, cross-training, and development. We also encourage participation in conferences, poster presentations, talks, and publications.

About CRUK Drug Discovery

As the world’s largest medical research charity, we have helped bring eleven new cancer drugs to market. We aim to accelerate the development of effective treatments through innovative approaches and collaboration, seeking radical ideas and embracing risk to achieve success.

What will I be doing?

This laboratory-based role focuses on designing and developing physiologically relevant biochemical assays in 384 and 1536 well formats to characterize cancer targets, enable high-throughput screening, analyze structure-activity relationships, and understand mechanisms of action to inform clinical decisions.

The successful candidate will stay abreast of cutting-edge biochemistry, enzymology, and HTS science, working closely with industry and academic partners to advance cancer targets towards patient benefit.

What skills will I need?

We seek an accomplished scientist with:

  • A BS, MSc, or PhD in biological sciences such as biochemistry or pharmacology; relevant experience may substitute education.
  • Significant experience in assay development within drug discovery, including enzyme and small molecule inhibitor mechanisms.
  • Deep understanding of biochemical assays and detection technologies, focusing on physiologically relevant systems.
  • Experience with liquid handling and automated dispensing.
  • Experience analyzing large datasets with appropriate statistical methods.
  • Desirable: experience running biochemical and cell-based high throughput screens in 384- and 1536-well formats, and analysis of high throughput screening data.

What will I gain?

We value ambition, professionalism, positive impact, and collaboration. We support your wellbeing, offer career and personal development, and provide high-quality tools. Our benefits page offers more details.

How do I apply?

We use an anonymized shortlisting process to promote equality, diversity, and inclusion. CVs are required but not viewed until interview invitation.
