Overview

Senior Scientist in Translational Pathology, Oncology

We are seeking a Senior Scientist to join the Translational Pathology group in Oncology R&D Translational Medicine. You will be at the forefront of the evolution of translational science for a global oncology group at AstraZeneca. You will have the opportunity to impact an industry-leading portfolio of programs from early clinical development of novel therapeutics through to post-marketing opportunities that support approved targeted therapies.

Major Responsibilities and Accountabilities

This is a lab-based position working in a Good Clinical Practice (GCP) environment.

In this role you will be using the best available science and technology to execute routine biomarker analysis and interpret and communicate the data as part of a matrix team. Your work will inform clinical decisions for selecting therapeutically relevant doses and schedules, as well as building our understanding of key cancer pathway interactions to guide rational drug combinations. In addition, your work will help define novel mechanisms of resistance to targeted therapies by studying tumours at relapse.

Skills and experience
  • BSc or MSc in a relevant scientific discipline with 3 years industry experience
  • Experience in manual or automated immunohistochemistry (brightfield or fluorescence)
  • Experience in microtomy
  • Experience working to Good Clinical Practice
  • Experience in development and validation of biomarker assays
  • Experience working with human tissues and tissue-based histopathology methods
  • Knowledge or experience in one or more AZ portfolio areas: tumour drivers and resistance, DNA damage response (DDR), immuno-oncology (IO) and antibody drug conjugates (ADC)
  • Experience of tracking and/or managing human tissues using sample tracking software (e.g. BSI, SAPIO, Azenta, etc.)
  • Highly organized and self-motivated
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team to deliver to projects
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong ability to troubleshoot and critically analyse data
Desirable/Advantageous
  • Previous pharmaceutical industry experience
  • Experience with digital image analysis solutions (e.g. ImageJ, HALO, Visiopharm)
  • Skills in developing multiplexed immunohistochemistry or in situ hybridization (ISH) assays
  • Career exposure to the pharmaceutical industry and the drug development process
