Senior Scientific Director – Medical Communications

Location: United Kingdom (Remote or Hybrid Options Available)

We’re partnering with a leading global medical communications agency to find a Senior Scientific Director to join their team. This is a senior leadership opportunity ideal for someone with a strong background in publications and medical affairs who enjoys leading teams, shaping scientific strategy, and working across complex therapy areas.

This position has become available due to continued new business growth, and offers the chance to work across high-impact therapeutic areas including cardiology, nephrology (including rare diseases), and dermatology. You’ll also have the opportunity to lead and mentor a high-performing scientific team.

The Role:

The Senior Scientific Director will be a key part of the scientific leadership team—bringing scientific insight, strategic direction, and operational excellence to a broad range of medical communications projects.

Responsibilities include:

• Serve as scientific lead on assigned accounts, managing complex projects across a wide variety of deliverables (publications, slide decks, digital materials, abstracts, meeting summaries, and more)
• Build and maintain strong client relationships, offering high-level scientific and strategic counsel
• Participate in client workshops and HCP engagements, confidently leading scientific discussions
• Partner with client services to ensure projects are delivered smoothly, on time, and aligned with strategic goals

Scientific Strategy

• Maintain deep knowledge in core therapeutic areas while staying up to date with scientific and medical developments
• Contribute thought leadership and future-focused ideas to support client growth and scientific excellence

New Business Development

• Identify opportunities for organic growth within accounts
• Lead the strategic and scientific components of new business proposals and pitches
• Collaborate cross-functionally with other teams to ensure compelling, tailored proposals

Team & Operational Leadership

• Mentor, coach, and develop team members across all levels
• Manage performance, set development goals, and support long-term career growth
• Support recruitment and onboarding of new team members
• Lead on resourcing, budget oversight, forecasting, and project delivery timelines
• Ensure all work meets internal and external quality, compliance, and editorial standards

What We’re Looking For:

• Advanced degree (PhD, MD, PharmD, or equivalent) in a life sciences discipline
• Significant experience in a medical communications agency environment
• Expertise in publications strategy and delivery, with exposure to medical affairs and scientific content across channels
• Proven leadership and team development experience
• Strong communication and influencing skills, with a track record of building trusted client relationships
• Excellent writing and editorial ability, with deep knowledge of pharma compliance and industry standards
