Job summary

SGN is seeking a Senior Risk & Policy Manager to provide strategic oversight of Safety Risk, Policy and Business Partnering. You will architect risk-based resource deployment, prioritise safety interventions, and ensure alignment with the Safety Management System (SMS) to deliver measurable risk reduction.

You’ll lead the Risk & Policy Leads, translate complex assurance findings into actionable policy, and report to senior leadership with evidence-based insights.

Qualifications

• NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent required.
• Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, Risk Management or related field preferred.
• 6+ years in high-risk, regulated industries (gas/utilities advantageous).
• Experience leading enterprise risk programmes and embedding assurance insights into SMS.
• Ability to translate complex findings into actionable policy and governance actions.

Responsibilities

• Own the SGN Safety Risk operating model and ensure risk-based resource deployment.
• Oversee policy adoption and assurance outputs for consistent safety domains across the business.
• Design and deliver a multi-year roadmap for risk interventions aligned with SMS and engineering standards.
• Provide senior leadership with evidence-based insights on risk and resource allocation.

Job Overview

As our Senior Risk & Policy Manager, you’ll provide the strategic oversight needed to keep our Safety Risk, Policy & Business Partnering capability sharp and impactful. You won’t just be managing policies, you’ll be the architect of our risk-based resource deployment, ensuring that every safety intervention is prioritised, aligned with our Safety Management System (SMS), and delivers measurable risk reduction across the board.

Key Responsibilities

• Strategic leadership by taking full ownership of the SGN Safety Risk operating model, ensuring we deploy our expertise where the risk is greatest.
• Overseeing policy adoption and assurance outputs to ensure consistent, high-standard safety domains across the entire business.
• Designing and delivering a multi-year roadmap for specialist risk interventions that align perfectly with our SMS and engineering standards.
• Providing senior leadership with evidence-based insights on risk, resource allocation, and the systemic improvements needed to keep us evolving.
• Leading and inspiring our Risk & Policy Leads, ensuring their performance is directly tied to our strategic safety outcomes.

What You Will Need

• NEBOSH National Diploma (or equivalent) & Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, Risk Management or related discipline – or significant equivalent working experience
• Deep expertise in Safety Management Systems (SMS), specifically policy governance and assurance
• A mastery of risk-based prioritisation and scoring to guide strategic resource allocation
• The ability to translate complex assurance findings into actionable policy or treatment plans
• High-level influencing skills, with the confidence to advise and challenge senior leadership using evidence-based insights
• 6+ years’ experience in high-risk, regulated industries (Gas or Utilities experience is highly advantageous)
• A proven track record of leading strategic safety or enterprise-level risk programmes
• Experience managing senior specialists and navigating third-party safety resource partnerships
• Direct experience embedding assurance insights into SMS and risk framework improvements
