Job description

Cardiff, London or Remote (UK) | £86,000 - £100,000 + Benefits

️ About our Risk & Control team:

We're looking for a senior leader to join Monzo’s ever growing, high performing Risk & Control team! The team provides support, advice and insight to our Accountable Executives in managing their risks. Relationships with them are owned by our Risk Partner teams. This role sits in our central Enablement function, responsible for providing data, systems, and insight to empower our Risk Partners. You’ll lead the Controls team of professionals who:

  • manage a programme of controls effectiveness testing;
  • provide advice on how to optimise our control suite to ensure that Monzo grows safely and that risks are managed as expected;
  • consistently deliver improved ways of monitoring Monzo’s control performance.

Your day-to-day

  • Lead on our programme to embed improved, risk-based controls monitoring across Monzo.
  • Lead on our initiative to consider the optimal operating model for controls testing and monitoring, considering how we can further improve the team’s service for its customers in a way that scales as Monzo grows.
  • Lead a team of specialists with good knowledge of Monzo, its ways of working and processes to provide excellent customer service to users of control monitoring outputs from across the 3 lines of defence.
  • Lead the team to deliver on its agreed control testing plans, reporting on findings to stakeholders and helping them to scope improvement activities (if applicable).
  • Use your commercial awareness to help understand and solve controls-related problems with the greatest business impact.
  • Work with our Risk Data and Platform teams to improve the actionable insights from the team’s activities, driving a culture of control consciousness across Monzo.

We’re looking for someone who cares deeply about understanding our business, customers and risks, who can communicate their findings clearly to business partners and can drive actions on top of insights.

We’d love to hear from you if…

  • What we’re doing here at Monzo excites you!
  • You're impact driven and eager to have a really positive impact on the company, product, users, and very importantly your colleagues as well.
  • You’re a strategic leader with experience of leading initiatives to improve adoption of technology and data solutions.
  • You have experience of leading a team of highly qualified specialists.
  • You're commercially minded and can help to put controls into business perspective.
  • You’re as comfortable getting hands-on as taking a step back and thinking strategically.
  • You have a self-starter mindset; you proactively identify issues and opportunities and tackle them without being told to do so.
  • You're a team player whom your colleagues can rely on, able to build relationships with folks across our 3 lines of defence.
  • You have solid grounding in risk and control processes.

The Interview Process

Our interview process involves three main stages:

  • Chat with a member of the hiring team.
  • Initial call with the hiring manager.
  • 2-part final stage interview (Technical & Behavioural) with members from the wider team.

Our average process takes around 2-3 weeks but we will always work around your availability. You will have the chance to speak to our recruitment team at various points during your process but if you do have any specific questions or want to talk through reasonable adjustments ahead of or during application please us at any point on business-hiring@monzo.com.

We’ll only close this role once we have enough applications for the next stage. Please submit your application as soon as possible to make sure you don’t miss out.

What’s in it for you:

This role can be based in our London or Cardiff office, but we're open to distributed working within the UK (with ad hoc meetings in London).

We offer flexible working hours and trust you to work enough hours to do your job well, at times that suit you and your team.

Learning budget of £1,000 a year for books, training courses and conferences.
