Job summary

British Gas, part of Centrica, is seeking a Senior Debt & Revenue Protection Officer to join a field-based team covering the Watford/St Albans area. You will investigate energy debt, welfare concerns and potential energy theft, making welfare-conscious decisions while safeguarding customers and the business.

You’ll work independently in the field, assess vulnerabilities, and balance compliant outcomes with customer welfare, safety and commercial needs.

Qualifications

• Experience in the energy industry with understanding of customer, technical and commercial processes.
• Knowledge of energy theft, revenue protection or related field operations.
• Excellent communication, listening and questioning skills.
• Strong empathy and desire to support customers facing challenging circumstances.
• Effective investigative and problem-solving abilities.

Responsibilities

• Visit customer premises to investigate debt, welfare concerns, suspected energy theft and metering irregularities.
• Assess each customer’s circumstances, identify vulnerabilities and agree the most appropriate resolution.
• Identify and address welfare, safety or metering concerns, including meter inspections where qualified.
• Complete energy consumption assessments and support accurate billing and account management.
• Discuss outstanding balances and suitable payment or smart metering solutions.
• Communicate difficult messages with empathy, negotiate outcomes and handle complaints.
• Use judgement to work safely in the field, de-escalate challenging situations.
• Ensure interactions comply with policies, regulations and revenue protection guidance.
