The Role

The Rosalind Franklin Institute is a national Research Centre funded by UK Research and Innovation, dedicated to transformative life science research through interdisciplinary approaches. The focus is on understanding the impact of viruses on the body, from protein structures to tissue changes.

We are expanding and seeking Senior Research Software Engineers (RSE) for our Artificial Intelligence and Informatics Theme. The RSE role involves maintaining institute-wide Data and Compute infrastructure (50%) and collaborating with research teams to develop scientific software (50%).

The Franklin handles large-scale data processing with complex scientific software on high-performance computing resources. The AI Core Team has developed cloud-based data and compute infrastructure supporting scientific workflows from data acquisition to publication. As a senior RSE, you will develop and adapt this infrastructure to meet scientific goals, designing and implementing software solutions tailored to research needs.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate on projects to develop scientific software including web applications, APIs, machine learning, and image processing.
  • Develop and deploy scientific software utilizing existing cloud/HPC/data infrastructure.
  • Follow good software development practices such as CI/CD, testing, and creating installers.
  • Gather requirements and collaborate across teams to facilitate project success.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of best practices.
  • Participate in scientific seminars and meetings to stay updated with new developments.
  • Manage projects involving Graduate and Student placements.
  • Line manage RSEs and RSAs.
  • Disseminate results via publications and presentations.
  • Support public engagement activities in science.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of data and compute infrastructure.
  • Provide user support and manage services including training and documentation.
