The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering (CSEE) is a large and dynamic department in the Faculty of Science and Health. The School is internationally known for its research in a range of areas and offers an excellent education to its students.

The Brain-Computer Interfaces and Neural Engineering (BCI-NE) laboratory

CSEE hosts the BCI-NE lab, founded in 2004, one of the largest and best equipped in Europe, and a top laboratory for non-invasive BCIs and human cognitive augmentation in the UK. The lab has produced highly visible international research, peer-reviewed publications, and has collaborations with institutions like MIT, NASA JPL, ESA, Harvard, UCB, Oxford, Imperial, and UCL. It has been recognized as a world-class element of CSEE in recent Research Evaluation Frameworks.

The BCI-NE lab is seeking two Senior Research Officers for a three-year fixed-term, full-time position, to work on the project ‘Semantic brain to computer communication’.

The Project and Duties of the Role

This project aims to develop a new BCI based on semantic decoding: identifying whole concepts individuals are thinking of from brain activity and natural language modeling. Responsibilities include designing experiments to record neural data while participants focus on specific concepts, analyzing data from EEG, fNIRS, and other signals, developing decoding models with signal processing and machine learning, and integrating natural language models with neural decoders to create novel Brain-Computer Interfaces. The role involves collaborating with the team to explore how neural engineering can enable accurate, real-time decoding of user intentions.

The successful applicant will perform these duties within the BCI-NE lab. A full list of duties is available in the respective job packs.

Skills and Qualifications Required

Applicants should hold a PhD (or be close to completing it) in Biomedical Engineering, Brain-Computer Interfaces, Neural Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Statistics, Physics, Computer Science, Neuroscience, or a related field. Evidence of developing a research agenda and a publication record in reputable, international journals is expected.

Significant programming experience is required, with preferred experience in signal processing, machine learning, neural signal statistical modeling, and related areas. Strong communication skills are also essential.

Applicants should have a strong publication record, preferably as first author, including publications in top quartile journals in relevant fields.
