About The Role

The Research and Development Manager is a senior role within the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences, responsible for driving large-scale, high-profile healthcare engineering grants that deliver real-world patient benefits and measurable impact. Working closely with the Head of School, Heads of Research Departments, academic and research staff, and external stakeholders, this role will play a pivotal part in securing funding, fostering strategic collaborations, and facilitating the translation of healthcare engineering innovations into clinical applications.

The Research and Development Manager will be instrumental in realizing the School’s vision by providing strategic and operational support, they will support the development and submission of competitive grant applications, fellowships, and funding proposals to governmental agencies, Charities, and industry sponsors. The role requires a strong scientific background, exceptional writing skills, and the ability to translate complex research concepts into clear, compelling narratives tailored to funder priorities.

This is a full time (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

  • PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant field, such as biomedical engineering, healthcare research, or translational science.
  • Proven experience securing research funding from UKRI, NIHR, EU, industry, and philanthropic sources, with a track record of developing successful multi-disciplinary funding applications.
  • Demonstrable experience in research strategy development, including aligning research funding opportunities with institutional priorities and long-term impact goals.
  • Strong project management experience, including supporting large-scale research programs, ensuring financial oversight, impact reporting, and compliance with research governance and ethics.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to shape compelling research proposals, prepare high-quality funding bids, and engage diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience of line management and developing individuals
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to track research impact, assess funding trends, and support preparations for Research Excellence Framework (REF) submissions.
  • Understanding of research translation, commercialization, and regulatory pathways, including intellectual property considerations and industry engagement.
  • Substantial experience of securing large strategic grants.
  • Experience of previous REF preparations.
  • Experience of research translation and commercialisation.
  • Experience working within a higher education or NHS research environment, supporting research growth and impact assessment.
  • Knowledge of Full Economic Costing (FEC), AcoRD principles, and research finance management systems (e.g., Worktribe/NHS equivalents).
  • Familiarity with innovation and enterprise functions, such as spin-outs, licensing agreements, and industry partnerships.
  • Project management qualification or training (e.g., PRINCE2, Agile, or equivalent).
  • Experience leading or contributing to REF submissionsin biomedical engineering or related disciplines.
