Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen at the University for an experienced technical Reporting Analyst to join the Business Systems team. This role is mainly focussed on Data Engineering activities, and we are looking for someone with either experience in this area, or with demonstrable capability and interest in moving into Data Engineering.

We are currently implementing the Microsoft Fabric platform, and the work could involve using a mixture of this product alongside supporting existing ETL platforms with training and support provided as required. Located within University Information Services (UIS), the Business Systems team are responsible for the maintenance & development of the University's critical ERP systems for handling administrative data across HR, Finance, Student & Teaching & Learning.

What you will do

Working on both operational support & project activities, you will assist with the development and maintenance of business systems integrations in support of strategic initiatives, whilst improving efficiency and reducing technical debt. You will demonstrate in-depth knowledge of systems integration approaches and associated technologies whilst providing a high level of support to our customers.

Your work will be varied and unique, and will involve working closely alongside other Reporting Analysts, Application Specialists, Database Administrators, Functional Analysts, Testers and our stakeholders in a constantly changing environment.

  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to review requirements, develop specifications & design effective solutions.
  • You will be a technical subject matter expert in our business systems reporting platforms, including knowledge transfer to/from others inside and outside the team.
  • Review & migrate code, including the analysis of both application and platform changes in relation to their impact on existing data flows in the source right through to the target, identifying and fixing any issues.
  • Work effectively with internal and external stakeholders through all stages of the software development lifecycle.
  • Support user testing of data integrations and reporting, e.g. through training, and the production of documentation.
  • Monitor performance and other operational aspects of the platforms, working with relevant stakeholders to resolve any issues or suggest enhancements.
  • Collaborate with the relevant systems helpdesks, investigate any incidents that are reported, resolve and advise users where appropriate.
What you will have
  • Knowledge of, and experience in relational & star schema database design, SQL, PL/SQL, system design, performance tuning and integration.
  • Experience of ETL processes & maintaining Data Warehouses.
  • The ability to learn new skills independently and proactively and constantly strive to raise technical excellence.
  • The ability to debug complex problems effectively, including in new unexplored applications.
  • Drive and commitment to see activities through to completion meeting deadlines matching pace to the urgency of the situation.
  • Knowledge of how to approach data & system security.
  • Experience of providing 2nd/3rd line support as part of an operational support team.
  • Experience of coordinating technical change in operational & project settings.
  • Strong planning and communication skills.
