Job summary

Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice in Headingley, Leeds, is hiring a Senior Registered Nurse to join our inpatient unit. The role offers 37.5 hours per week with shift rotations including nights and weekends, and a pay band of £18.81–£19.29 per hour, plus a 30% enhancement for unsociable hours.

You will provide compassionate, holistic care and lead a multidisciplinary team. We expect an NMC registered nurse with UK post-registration experience, CPD commitment, and strong leadership to mentor staff

Qualifications

  • Evidence of CPD and mentor training (or willing to undertake).
  • Proven ability to lead and develop a clinical team.

Plus 30% enhancement for nights and weekends and continuation of NHS Pension

About the role

In palliative care no day is the same. Working on our inpatient unit provides a unique opportunity because we care for patients with such a variety of conditions and symptoms. If you’d like to develop your knowledge of many different conditions and the impact this has on patients and their families a role in palliative care with Sue Ryder is for you.

Our senior nurses play an indispensable role in providing compassionate, holistic care for patients with life-limiting illnesses. Their work extends far beyond medical tasks, encompassing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support for both patients and their families.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced nurse who wants to work in a supportive environment where care of the patients comes first.

Our senior nurses work on a rotational shift pattern, including early shifts, late shifts, long days, nights, and weekends. As this role supports a 24/7 service, we are seeking candidates with flexibility to work a range of shifts as required.

The successful applicants will play an active role within our multidisciplinary team. You will work alongside Specialty Doctors, therapy staff, volunteers and other vital members of the MDT taking a holistic approach in providing the best possible outcomes for each patient.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Providing support, leadership, recognition and supervision to other members of the team
  • Sharing knowledge and expertise with other staff through formal and informal teaching.
  • Acting as a mentor to student nurses
  • Producing accurate, timely and complete records
About you

Our ideal candidate will have experience of working in Palliative and End of Life Care. This experience may come from a hospice or alternatively, for example, from a High Dependency Unit or Oncology service. Experience and qualifications needed for this role:
  • NMC Registered Nurse with post-registration UK experience in the clinical field
  • Completion of NMC recognised accredited mentor training or willing to undertake
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Proven ability to build, lead and influence an effective team in a clinical setting
  • Knowledge of current legislation within the independent care sector
  • Knowledge of best clinical practice for client group
  • Demonstrable experience of practising in a self-directed and highly motivated way
Essential minimum criteria
  • NMC Registered Nurse with relevant post-registration UK clinical experience.
  • Experience of caring for patients with palliative, end-of-life or other complex/life-limiting conditions, gained within a relevant clinical setting.
  • Demonstrable experience of providing clinical leadership, including supporting, supervising or guiding other members of a nursing/care team.
  • Evidence of continued professional development (CPD) and a commitment to maintaining and developing clinical knowledge and skills.
  • Ability to work flexibly across a 24/7 rota, including early, late, long-day, night and weekend shifts.
