Job summary

Queen Alexandra Charity (QAC) in Birmingham is seeking a Senior Reactive Maintenance Operative for a full-time, on-site post. You will respond to maintenance requests, diagnose faults, and carry out repairs across plumbing, electrical, joinery and building fabric to keep facilities safe and reliable.

The role supports preventive maintenance, conducts routine checks, and ensures health and safety compliance.

Qualifications

• Strong maintenance and repair across building and facilities
• Experience with equipment maintenance and safe operation of tools and systems
• Preventive maintenance planning and servicing to reduce downtime
• Troubleshooting faults and implementing safe solutions
• Vocational qualification in building/mechanical/electrical discipline (NVQ/City & Guilds)
• Good understanding of health and safety regulations and risk assessments

• Experience in education, care or charity environment and accessibility awareness

Job description

The Senior Reactive Maintenance Operative is a full-time, on-site role based in Birmingham, responsible for maintaining QAC’s buildings, facilities, and equipment to a safe and reliable standard. Day-to-day tasks include responding promptly to maintenance requests, diagnosing faults, and carrying out repairs across a range of disciplines (e.g., basic plumbing, electrical, joinery, and general building fabric). The role involves performing routine checks, supporting preventive maintenance schedules, and ensuring compliance with health and safety policies and statutory requirements. The operative will coordinate with internal teams and external contractors, prioritise workloads, keep accurate records of work completed, and contribute to maintaining accessible, well-presented environments for students, residents, and community service users. The role may include occasional out-of-hours work or participation in an on-call rota to address urgent issues.

Qualifications

• Strong skills in maintenance and repair, including Maintenance & Repair and general Maintenance, with experience in building and facilities upkeep.
• Proficiency in Equipment Maintenance, ensuring safe, reliable operation of tools, machinery, and building systems.
• Experience with Preventive Maintenance, including planning and carrying out scheduled inspections and servicing to reduce downtime.
• Effective Troubleshooting skills, with the ability to diagnose issues quickly and implement practical, safe solutions.
• Relevant vocational qualification or apprenticeship in a building, mechanical, electrical, or facilities-related discipline (e.g., NVQ, City & Guilds, or equivalent).
• Good understanding of health and safety regulations, safe working practices, and risk assessments within a premises or educational setting.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and communicate clearly with colleagues, residents, and external contractors.
• Experience in an education, care, or charity environment, and familiarity with accessibility needs for people with disabilities, is an advantage.
• Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel between QAC sites as required.
