Senior Radiographer (Peripheral - Launceston Hospital) - Imaging

Do you have postgraduate NHS clinical experience in x-ray imaging, and would you like the opportunity to run your own x-ray department day-to-day? Are you ready to develop? Do you think you can help us drive forward quality and care?

We invite you to join our friendly team at University Hospitals Plymouth Trust, working at our peripheral imaging unit at Launceston Hospital, Cornwall. Launceston, the ancient capital of Cornwall, is known for its independent shops, cafes, and early architecture, including Launceston Castle.

Launceston X-Ray department is an integral part of Launceston Hospital, providing imaging services to wards, the Minor Injuries Unit, Outpatients, and GP referrals, operating from 0830 to 1700, Sunday to Friday.

Applications are welcomed from diagnostic radiographers with postgraduate experience in X-Ray (plain film), including sound proven clinical knowledge of the modality. As a Senior Radiographer, you would be expected to provide clinical excellence, leadership, and teaching, working as part of a multidisciplinary team. You will oversee the day-to-day running of the department and liaise with the GP Lead Radiographer and others within the Trust regarding clinical governance.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who can demonstrate recent relevant experience as per the Person Specification.***

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Radiographer to join our imaging team as a Senior Radiographer at Launceston Hospital. We seek an enthusiastic HCPC-registered Radiographer with postgraduate NHS experience to deliver a high-quality, effective, and efficient radiographic service to the highest professional standards. You will play a vital role in patient care, so positivity, adaptability, and high standards are essential to maintain the Trust's reputation. Launceston Imaging department is one of six peripheral sites under UHPT, where you will work autonomously (within a job share) managing the day-to-day imaging service.

Main duties of the job
  • Undertake radiographic duties primarily at Launceston X-ray department, with the flexibility to work at other peripheral sites and Derriford Hospital as needed.
  • Ensure high standards of radiographic quality and patient care, supporting continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Perform routine diagnostic techniques, accurately position patients, and produce diagnostic-quality images efficiently.
  • Evaluate and maintain the quality of work, taking corrective action when necessary.
  • Respond flexibly to departmental needs, prioritizing workload to ensure effective patient throughput.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and staff at Launceston Hospital to deliver a high-quality service.
  • Manage GP access services, including setting up CRIS diaries with the bookings team.
  • Follow local and Trust policies, protocols, and professional standards.
  • Ensure the safe use of all equipment, including complex and expensive machinery.
  • Assess when guidance or support is needed and act accordingly.
  • Implement stock management principles to reduce waste and optimize resources.
  • Physically move equipment and patients as required, exerting moderate effort.
  • Ensure patient safety and comfort, providing information and reassurance as needed, including for vulnerable groups.

Qualifications
  • Current HCPC registration
  • BSc in Diagnostic Radiography or equivalent
  • Postgraduate NHS experience in a large clinical setting

Knowledge and Experience
  • Proven ability to position patients accurately and produce high-quality images.
  • Postgraduate experience in a similar role with sound clinical knowledge.
  • Experience working in a large clinical environment.

  • Knowledge of specialist imaging equipment.
Aptitude & Abilities
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to establish rapport quickly with patients, including children and vulnerable groups.
