We are currently seeking an experienced Senior R&D Project Manager to join our dynamic Research and Development team, based in Dunfermline. This role is ideal for someone with a strong background in complex system engineering, electronics, software or product design, and professional expertise in managing the full lifecycle of medical device development initiatives.

You will be responsible for the panning, coordination, and execution of high-value ophthalmic device development projects, ensuring delivery on time, within budget, and to the highest standards. The role requires commercial awareness, a deep understanding of the medical device development lifecycle, and the ability to provide project leadership across multidisciplinary, international teams. You will collaborate with Engineering Management, international development teams, and key stakeholders to drive project planning, maintain documentation, and deliver regular progress reports to both project teams and senior leadership.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Project execution management within an agile development framework to maintain technical governance of development activities across multiple, cross-functional teams from scoping to completion.
  • Coordinate project resources for the on-time execution of projects.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date project plans for tracking and monitoring of project to support on-time delivery within scope and budget.
  • Work with Product and Stakeholder Management groups to manage and report changes to project scope, project schedules, and project costs.
  • Liaise with Product Development, Product Management, and key Business Stakeholders to ensure all project information is clear, accurate and accessible.
  • Coordinate regular development planning, retrospective review and system/solution demos across international development teams.
  • Issue regular progress updates to management and present appropriate information, as requested, at project review meetings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • BEng or MEng degree in Engineering or similar technically focused subject are, or equivalent education gained through work experience.
  • Experience managing complex R&D / design activities across complete product lifecycle, preferably with experience in the management of both internal and external engineering groups.
  • A proven track record in managing complex product development within regulated industry.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, commercially astute with the ability to negotiate and convey complex project information across technical and non-technical stakeholder groups.
  • Experience in reporting to board-level management.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in a relevant industry or consultancy.
  • Experience in developing ophthalmic healthcare or medical devices and diagnostics applications, leading projects across all phases, from concept, design & development, transfer to manufacturing, CE marking / FDA regulatory approval and launch, would be desirable.
