Job summary

Seqens in Middlesbrough, United Kingdom, is seeking a Senior R&D Chemist to join the R&D Lab. The role focuses on developing lab-scale processes (<20 L) and collaborating with engineers to scale to manufacturing quantities, while ensuring safety and high-quality documentation.

You will report to the R&D Team Leader and contribute to multi-disciplinary teams, transfer analytical methods, and support QA/regulatory activities. A degree in chemistry and strong communication skills are essential for success.

Qualifications

  • Degree in chemistry required.
  • Strong knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry and lab skills.
  • Ability to plan and execute work independently.
  • Demonstrated project management and teamwork abilities.
  • Excellent communication of complex technical information.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain high lab housekeeping and safety standards.
  • Develop lab-scale processes (<20 L) and assist scaling to manufacturing quantities.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports on R&D work.
  • Collaborate with quality control to transfer analytical methodologies.
  • Contribute to cross-disciplinary teams for new chemical processes.
  • Participate in cross-functional process safety reviews.
  • Mentor junior team members.
  • Support QA and regulatory colleagues in customer service.

Job title

Senior R&D Chemist

Position Context

Working within Research & Development team reporting to the R&D Team Leader.

Main tasks
  • Ensure good housekeeping throughout the lab, maintaining high standards of health and safety
  • Develop lab scale processes (< 20 L) and work with chemical engineers to scale to manufacturing quantities (vessels ranging from 10-30 m;3)
  • Prepare detailed technical reports on all R&D work
  • Collaborate with quality control team to facilitate the transfer of analytical methodologies
  • Effectively contribute to multi-disciplinary teams for the introduction of new chemical processes
  • Perform an assessment of reactive chemistries and participate in cross-functional process safety reviews
  • Contribute to the training and mentorship of more junior team members
  • Support quality assurance and regulatory colleagues in customer service support
Required skills
  • Degree in chemistry
  • Good working knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry and associated laboratory skills
  • Ability to plan and execute work independently
  • Demonstrable project management skills and ability to work with multifunctional teams
  • Excellent communication abilities; able to articulate complex technical information to any audience
  • Flexible attitude towards the support of industrial manufacturing processes
Desirable skills
  • Higher degree in chemistry or related subject
  • Experience working in an industrial lab
  • Knowledge of lean six sigma and related operational excellence tools
  • Familiarity with analytical techniques for the quantification of low level (ppm/ppb) organic impurities
  • Knowledge of quality management systems
  • Understanding of HAZOP and LOPA processes
