Job description
About The Role and Team

Since 2021 our team has been listed every year in the “Top 100 Startups worth watching” in the EE Times, and our technology breakthroughs have been featured in The Telegraph, BBC and the New Statesman. Our founders are internationally renowned researchers from UCL and Oxford University who have pioneered the development of qubits and quantum computing architectures. Our chairman is the co-founder of Cadence and Synopsys, the two leading companies in the area of Electronic Design Automation. We’re backed by a team of top-tier investors including Bosch Ventures, Porsche SE, Sony Innovation Fund, Oxford Sciences Innovations, INKEF Capital andOctopus Ventures, and we have so far raised over £62 million in equity and grant funding.

We bring together the brightest quantum engineers, integrated circuit (IC) engineers, quantum computing theoreticians and software engineers to create a unique, world-leading team, working together closely to maximise our combined expertise. Our collaborative and interdisciplinary culture is an ideal fit for anyone who thrives in a cutting-edge research and development environment focused on tackling big challenges and contributing to the development of scalable quantum computers based on silicon technology.

Our team of 100+ is based in Oxford and London, with a centre of mass in our Islington lab.

Our Team

Quantum Motion is a fast-growing quantum computing scale-up based in London. We are developing quantum processors based on industrial-grade silicon chips, with the potential to radically transform computing power in areas such as materials modelling, medicine, artificial intelligence and more.

Functions of the Role

As aSenior Quantum Design Engineer, you will drive the design of silicon spin qubit-based QPUs with integrated control and readout. You will play a key role in establishing robust, industry-standard design methodologies while ensuring seamless integration across quantum devices, control electronics, and system architecture. Collaboration with diverse experts across quantum device physics IC design, cryogenics, process integration, and system integration is essential as you tapeout devices ranging from proof-of-concept test vehicles to large-scale, highly manufacturable quantum processors.

  • Contribute to the design of QPUs and 3D integrated systems – including layout, simulation, and verification – from concept definition to tapeout.
  • Implement fully verified (e.g., DRC, LVS), detailed chip and mask layouts for tapeout on schedule.
  • Perform EM simulations and develop models for processor components.
  • Develop hardware design methodologies, infrastructure, and PDK to align with industry-standard engineering practices, such as PCells, and automated layout and verification.
  • Collaborate with fellow designers and integrators to optimise device manufacturability.
  • Collaborate with experimentalists to correlate experimental data to models.
  • Communicate effectively across diverse expertise, ensuring shared understanding and smooth project execution.
  • Provide and maintain tapeout schedule.
  • Document work and perform design reviews.

Experience - Essentials
  • Master’s degree in engineering or related field with 3+ years industry experience
  • Demonstrated layout experience in sub-micron processes with preferably Virtuoso XL (L and KLayout considered)
  • Proficiency in DRC & LVS with Calibre or similar
  • Demonstrated EM simulation experience (e.g., HFSS, ADS, CST)
  • Experience coding automated design tools using preferably SKILL, or Python
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high-level of self-management and self-motivation
  • Proven ability to work across diverse technical teams.

Experience - Desirable
  • Experience with quantum device design and/or experimental experience with qubits
  • Experience with flip-chip and/or 3D integrated design and layout
  • Knowledge of nanofabrication, e-beam lithography, and/or advanced packaging
  • Knowledge of layout-dependent effects
  • Understanding of RF testing
  • Familiarity with cryogenic electronics

Benefits
  • Be part of a creative, world-leading team
  • Competitive salary and share options scheme
  • Contributory pension scheme
  • Group private medical insurance scheme
  • Life Assurance
  • Cycle-to-work Scheme
  • Central London location
