Job summary

McLaughlin & Harvey is seeking a Senior Quantity Surveyor to lead cost management on high value civils projects. The role involves budgeting, procurement, subcontractor negotiations and contractual risk management.

The successful candidate will oversee a Commercial team, maintain strong client relationships, and ensure effective interaction between site operations and commercial teams. Hybrid working options are available across UK projects.

Qualifications

• Degree in Civil Engineering.
• Civil engineering experience on civils projects.
• Strong knowledge of JCT & NEC forms of contract.
• Sound commercial awareness.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, negotiate and analyse costs for budgets.
• Ensure sub-contractors are pre-qualified.
• Procure sub-contractors and prepare order documentation.
• Certify sub-contractor interim payments and issue notices.
• Advise on contractual issues and manage commercial risks.
• Produce monthly Cost Value Reconciliation.
• Maintain relationships with stakeholders.
• Plan and supervise work of teams and individuals.
• Mentor Quantity Surveyors and support Commercial team.

What you will be doing

• Preparing, negotiating and analysing costs for budgets.
• Ensure sub-contractors are pre-qualified in accordance with management systems.
• Procurement of Sub-Contractors and preparation of Sub-Contractor order documentation.
• Assessing and certification of sub-contractor interim payments and ensuring required Payer / Pay-less notices as issued.
• Advising on a range of legal and contractual issues and identification and management of commercial risks.
• Production and presentation of monthly Cost Value Reconciliation on projects.
• Establish, maintain and enhance effective working relationships.
• Plan, allocate and evaluate work carried out by teams, individuals and self.
• Assist in managing the Commercial team and supervise and mentor Quantity Surveyors.
• Ensure effective interaction between the commercial and operational site teams.

What We're Looking For

• Degree Qualified Candidate
• Civil Engineering experience
• Good knowledge of construction contracts particularly the JCT & NEC Forms of Contract
• Sound Commercial Awareness
• Excellent communication & negotiation skills
• High levels of organisational skills
• Ability to meet deadlines
• Excellent numerical, IT and problem-solving skills
• Ability to travel frequently to site, as and when required
