Job summary

Balfour Beatty Power Transmission & Distribution in Motherwell seeks a Senior Quantity Surveyor to lead commercial delivery on SPEN framework projects across Central Scotland. You will manage costs, contract compliance, and commercial governance while mentoring junior staff.

Qualifications

About the role

Balfour Beatty Power Transmission & Distribution is seeking an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to join our commercial team supporting the delivery of major projects across the Scottish Power Energy Networks (SPEN) Framework within the Central Belt of Scotland.

Based from our Motherwell office and project locations across the region, you will play a key role in the commercial management of a portfolio of electricity transmission and distribution projects. This is an excellent opportunity to join a secure, long-term framework delivering critical infrastructure that will support the UK's transition to a low-carbon future.

As a Senior Quantity Surveyor, you will be responsible for managing all costs and income within your area of responsibility, ensuring commercial success while driving value and maintaining the highest standards of governance and contractual compliance. You will also support the development of junior commercial team members and help shape the future of the function through mentoring and leadership.

The role offers flexibility and can be undertaken on a full-time, part-time or job-share basis, in line with Balfour Beatty's flexible working policies.

What you'll be doing

As a Senior Quantity Surveyor, you will be responsible for managing all commercial and contractual aspects of projects, ensuring maximum value is achieved whilst maintaining the highest standards of quality and performance.

Key responsibilities include:

• Managing the commercial performance of major infrastructure projects from inception through to final account.
• Preparing, reviewing and negotiating subcontract agreements and commercial terms.
• Managing compensation events, variations, claims and contractual entitlements.
• Producing accurate cost forecasts, CVRs, and financial reports.
• Supporting procurement activities and supply chain management.
• Monitoring subcontractor performance and valuations.
• Identifying, managing and mitigating commercial risks and opportunities.
• Providing commercial support to project delivery teams and senior stakeholders.
• Analysing rates, prices and cost data to maximise project value.
• Supporting the preparation and negotiation of claims where required.
• Mentoring and developing Assistant and Quantity Surveyors within the commercial team.
• Contributing to the continuous improvement of commercial processes and best practice.

Who we're looking for

Essential

• BSc or MSc in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related discipline.
• Chartered status (MRICS, MCIOB, MCInstCES) or actively working towards professional accreditation.
• Proven experience in a Quantity Surveying role within infrastructure, utilities, power, civil engineering or major projects.
• Strong knowledge of NEC contracts.
• Excellent commercial, contractual and financial management skills.
• Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and build strong working relationships.
• Full UK Driving Licence.
• CSCS Card (Professionally Qualified Person).

Desirable

• Experience working within the energy, transmission, distribution or utilities sector.
• Previous experience leading or mentoring junior commercial professionals.
• Knowledge of Scottish Power Energy Networks projects or frameworks.
• Experience of framework contracts and collaborative delivery models.
